I love all of the books (even the first half of The Two Towers), the Rankin/Bass Hobbit, and New Line's LotR trilogy. But I couldn't watch the second and third Hobbit movies because I think the first one's ridiculously excessive (the "Barrels Out of Bond" scene was the point where I decided was done with it).

I'm hoping that this show's more like the former works than the latter, but the still of Galadriel decked out for battle while casually strolling away from an explosion like a boss doesn't give me a lot of initial hope. XD

One Saturday, having gotten home from a trip the night before, my wife and I watched all three LotR back to back to back while doing laundry and otherwise just resting. They're spectacular.

The LOR Trilogy was awesome. The Hobbit was torture. Where do these stories come from? The Silmarillion? If not, it seems like it is bound to be a crapshoot.
Yeah, I too skipped the 2nd and 3rd Hobbit after seeing that the first one was crap. Ended up seeing like half of the second one once but didn't really pay much attention when it was on. The book the Hobbit is half the length of ONE of the books in the LotR trilogy, and they made it into just as much movie. Naked cash grab. Hopefully this doesn't suck, but yeah if it's not based on a close adaptation of Tolkein's stories I'm not too optimistic for anything other than a nice spectacle.

The show's set in the Second Age and draws it plots from the material mentioned in the LotR appendices and The Silmarillion. The main showrunners are big Tolkien fans so hopefully they've got a solid plan to stretch what they've got to work with out evenly over five seasons.

Hope so! I read the Hobbit and the first book of the LOR trilogy in the 5th grade. Finished the trilogy and then in 8th or 9th grade picked up the Silmarrillion. Wow! It was dense. I did not get far.

That's pretty ambitious to set out intending for this to be a 5-season affair. I think American tv in general has a tendency toward bloat, because if you're gonna put that much money and effort into it you want to milk to for all the dollars you can. When you probably make a better product with a much tighter show that is as long as necessary to tell the story.

According to an article I read Tolkien is a personal obsession's of Jeff Bezos and he has committed a billion dollars to the series. Nothing is official but word is they hope to have 5 seasons.

LOTR is an amazing trilogy, and the extended editions even made it better. Hobbit is so so, I have watched the trilogy as a whole (saw them all in theater back when going to the theater was a thing), and I agree that the cash cow decision to make it a trilogy instead of 2 movies was a mistake and resulted in a lot of bloating.

As for this series, we will see. Reacher & Jack Ryan are about the only shows I watch from Amazon Prime (pay it purely for the 5% cash back we get as we spend a crap ton on Amazon a year and break even with the cash back, even with it going to $140 a year soon). Bosch is another good show on there and Vikings was on there to stream...but overall, not my favorite service

The second age lasts for 3400 years from the time Melkor is defeated to Sauron losing the one ring to Isildur. That is a lot of history that can be covered but a lot of it is high level stuff and not as detailed as the Lord of the Rings is. It could be good it could suck. I'd be disappointed if it does suck.

It will be interesting to see them handle the relationships between the elves, the Numenorians and Sauron. I'm interested how they will chose the portray Sauron's "fair form" assuming it covers that part of the history and considering the title they will.

As a huge fan of Tolkien and his world, I loved the Lord of the Rings but the Hobbit was too much meh. Bilbo and the dwarves became extras in their own movies by the end. I will give it a shot but in no way does it match my excitement in 2000 of the build up to the Fellowship of the Ring being unleashed onto a mostly unsuspecting world.

The first season of Jack Ryan was good. Second not as much. We love Bosch and the Expanse. First season of Reacher was a good ride.

I guess I'm in the minority. If I have the choice between watching The LOTR or The Hobbit right now, I prefer to watch The Hobbit. Maybe it's because I didn't read the book growing up and didn't worry about how one book was stretched out to become 3 movies.

Don't get me wrong, I probably enjoyed The LOTR a bit more while they were both at the movies. I just think The Hobbit has grown on me as the years have gone on since it's release. Regardless of which you prefer, I'm hoping for more movie series like those 2 in the future. Not many really good sequel worthy movies these days in the fantasy category.
