Finland and Estonia are formally investigating a Chinese vessel that drug its anchor over 100 nautical miles though the Gulf of Finland, hitting telecom and gas lines.
The Chinese-owned container ship, Newnew Polar Bear, and a Russian cargo vessel (the Sevmorput) transiting the Gulf of Finland in early October are alleged to have been in areas where damage to an undersea natural gas pipeline and two telecommunications cables took place by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation and by the Swedish government.

Damage to Balticconnector: Chinese ship possibly dragged anchor for hundreds of kilometers
28.11.2023Possible Chinese ship NewNew Polar Bear dragged its anchor along the seabed for hundreds of kilometers, ERR reports.
It is suspected of damaging the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Estonia and Finland; it is also suspected of damaging underwater communication cables between Estonia, Finland and Sweden.This became known during an investigation conducted by the Estonian Prosecutor’s Office.
According to their version, the Newnew Polar Bear ship, owned by a Chinese company, is the main suspect in this incident.
Estonia has now issued an extensive request for legal assistance to China, urging the law enforcement agencies of the PRC to take the necessary procedural measures against the ship and its crew.
