An honest question...

What the deal with State coaches talking **** at their first few press conferences and meetings about State's rivals?

I don't remember Orgeron, as stupid as he was, do that. He made the "fence" comment, but I don't really think that's talking ****. Its actually pretty much the same thing all coaches have said, State or Ole Miss: We have to keep the MS talent in the state.

Nutt didn't even mention State or LSU.

But Croom talked **** and Mullen talked ****.

I'm not saying its not all good and well and I wouldn't like it if an Ole Miss HC did it (because I haven't had to decide yet), I'm just wondering what the deal is.

either way. Some State fans love to hear that **** so that's what gets them going.

I don't care either way at this point, because it doesn't matter how much you talk, what happens on the field is all that matters.

I respect a coach more, no matter who it is (JoePa, Pete Carroll, etc), when they talk great about the team they're playing that week, nothing but compliments, and then go out and whip their *** on the field.

that he was looking forward to next Thanksgiving when they [Rebels] come to Starkville and made a comment that we'll be ringing our bells. I don't see this as a smack talking at all. I mean, come on, we just got beat to our in-state rival 45-0. I would think it makes perfect sense to make that comment to a group of fans eager to win again.

I believe that he said that he intended to ring cowbells when we come to Starkville. I would think that Commissioner Slive would be more upset about that than us. Hell, they've been ringing those damn things as long as I can remember. Nothing new.

"The little school across town" (USC)
"The public School across town" (UCLA)

Rivalries is rivalries.

That's good advice.

...since you're not a fan of a Other University.

Ole Miss, like Alabama, Texas, South Carolina, etc., the universities that have the professional graduate programs in law and medicine have been historically seen as being the de facto elite public universities by many people-- especially those who are fans of MSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Clemson, etc.

While Land Grant universities often are the "other universities," it's not limited to them. Pittsburgh and Stanford are also examples of Other Universities. Pitt's big rival for years was Penn State, and everyone loved Penn State. For years (I don't know if it's still true) Stanford's athletic ticket office number was BEAT CAL.

Incidentally the reason why Jackie Sherrill stayed so long at MSU. He had a lot of experience being at the Other University. He coached at Washington State with Washington being the more regarded college, Pittsburgh (and more Pennsylvanians loved Penn State), Texas A&M, and, of course, MSU.

So why the needling of Ole Miss? Because after all, it's Ole Miss.

Is that usually the comment is directly in response to some stupid media reporters question... They love to stir the pot and get quotes. I guess at the Ole Miss press conferences Boone must tell them in advance "you respond to anything related to MSU and your fired, they are not our rival"

Of course, I have never really felt the need to watch an Ole Miss press conference either so I can only go by you saying they never mention MSU.

Ole Miss references were started by a fan or fans who yelled out "GTHOM". Mullen made one mention of "the school up north" and the few fans in on that kinda went back & forth with him on the smack.

he made some comments about waving at Alabama on the way to the SECCG next year, as well.

Also...I didn't watch his press conference, since I was at work...doing, you know, work. I read all of it on this site.
