All was quiet on the University of Miami coaching front Monday --
or at least it seemed that way in the midst of the Hurricanes' search to
replace coach Randy Shannon.</p>
The speculation has centered on ESPN Monday Night Football
analyst Jon Gruden, who won a Super Bowl in 2002 as coach of the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers and has not coached since he was fired after the 2008
season (other than as a volunteer at Tampa Carrollwood High, where his
son, Deuce, is a junior quarterback).</p>
Gruden brings the ``Wow''
factor more than any other candidate, and some believe a deal is
quietly brewing. But just in case they're dreaming, here are some other
potential candidates (in no particular order): </p>
<span class="bullet">•</span> Dan Mullen -- Former Gators
offensive coordinator and Tim Tebow mentor, who now coaches Mississippi
State. Mullen -- a spread offense guy -- led the Bulldogs to an 8-4
record this season after a 5-7 inaugural season. He makes $1.2 million
and is one of the hot young coaches, and knows this state for
recruiting. He is expected to eventually go to a high-profile program,
though those who cover him don't believe it will be UM. Matthew Stevens
of The Starkville Daily News put a transcript on his blog of Mullen
during a First Call radio interview Monday in Tupelo, Miss. ``I guess
it's a good thing for myself and for MSU because it means we're
winning,'' Mullen said, amid talk of teams targeting him as a candidate.
``Speculation only comes when you're winning. I think a lot of that
stuff gets overblown. . . . I have not been approached by anybody at
this point and my wife and I are very happy here at Mississippi State.''</p>
Intriguing fact about Mullen: His defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, is the son of former Miami mayor Manny Diaz.</p>
<span class="bullet">•</span>
Jim Leavitt -- UM athletic director Kirby Hocutt's position coach at
Kansas State, where Hocutt was a linebacker. The two are close and have
been seen recently at lunch together. Leavitt did a remarkable job
coaching South Florida from the program's inception, leading the Bulls
to a 94-57 record from 1997 through 2009, five bowls games and even a
short-lived No. 2 ranking. But the fiery coach was dismissed last
January after a three-week investigation concluded that ``he grabbed
walk-on running back Joel Miller by the throat and slapped him twice in
the face during halftime of USF's Nov. 21 game against Louisville,''
according to The St. Petersburg Times. Leavitt, 54, sued USF for
wrongful termination and strongly denies the allegations.</p>
<span class="bullet">•</span>
Gary Patterson -- TCU coach who led the Horned Frogs to an 11-0 record
and No. 3 BCS ranking. Fat chance landing Patterson, whose Frogs
announced Monday they are moving to the Big East Conference. Not only
does Patterson make $2.5 million, his team will be able to earn, on its
own, an automatic BCS berth as of 2012.</p>
``This is a great
move,'' Patterson told The Associated Press. ``I'll say this, we don't
seem to get bored around this place.''</p>
<span class="bullet">•</span>
Mark Richt -- Georgia coach and former Hurricanes quarterback whose
Bulldogs had a disappointing 6-6 season. Richt, a former FSU offensive
coordinator, brushed off any talk of being courted by UM. ``Georgia is
my home and it's where I want to finish my career,'' he said. He said he
had not been contacted by anyone from Miami. </p>
<span class="bullet">•</span>
Chris Petersen -- Boise State coach who led Broncos to a 10-1 record
this season and 59-5 record since 2006. Petersen, a former offensive
coordinator, runs a creative, prolific offense that is currently No. 2
in scoring (46.3 ppg). Petersen's name continually comes up in coaching
searches. He told The Idaho Statesman on Monday that other schools have
contacted him recently, but he would not disclose specifics. ``I have
had no real discussions,'' he told The Statesman. ``. . . Who knows what
happens down the road, but I know we have a good thing here and I don't
take that for granted.''</p>
<span class="bullet">•</span> Brent
Venables -- Oklahoma defensive coordinator who is well-respected and
played with Hocutt at Kansas State. A source said he will be considered
for the job.</p>
<span class="bullet">•</span> Randy Edsall -- Has
led UConn to a 73-69 record in 12 seasons. Likes to recruit players from
South Florida. He is not flashy, just an old-school, traditional
pro-style, heavy-on-the-run-type coach. On Monday, Edsall was asked
about rumors linked to him and the Minnesota opening. ``No, I have not
been contacted by anybody,'' Edsall said during the Big East Conference
call. Edsall interviewed for the Georgia Tech job that Paul Johnson got
in 2008.</p>
Miami Herald sportswriter Manny Navarro contributed to this report.</p></div><span>
