i think bears are the worst pick...

as pc as your campus and school has been in the last 5 years the worst thing you can do is give them a generic mascot... you know how many schools are the bears...

now if the mascot were the hotty toddys or the land sharks you will never take the rebels from ole miss...
I could see a movement now to make you become pc and be the ole miss bears

my not ever happen, but i remember ppl in 1999 telling me we will always sign dixie, at my school

have an elephant. A sportswriter way back in time said the Bama o-line charged like Red Elephants.

I never heard anyone say, or seen anyone write that Ole Miss did anything having to do with a bear.

Except maybe Eddie O bear hugging Powe.
I have heard on several occasions while walking through the grove, "It smells like f'in bear **** out here." so maybe that's it.

Now they too can have a SNL skit that plays on their "smaller than our" jumbotron.

I can see it now- a group of fans "grovin" sitting around several bottles of whiskey talking smack bout "da Bears"

What other school could cross the boundaries between nerds and athletes? Conquering that would have been more amazing than becoming politically correct

I love how it's went from " that SOB Dan Jones wants to get rid of colonel reb! We need to far his *** and get someone that is in line with out tradushuns! Colonel reb is a symbol of UM football!"

to

" aww 17 it. It's for the kids."

I have to give it to the Rebs. Damage control would be a hell of an elective there.

instead of being captured by the Red Army. But, like the Ole Miss vote, these options sucked big-time.

Exactly, which is why I thought the way to go would have been something generic like the Philly Fanatic.

Which is what I think they were going for with Hotty Toddy, but they blew it with the original description, so that people had to freak out forcing them to turn him into the Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four rather than going the way of a muppet like Philly Fanatic.

Mascots are Muppet-like, but the description freaked people out.

The concepts were just concepts. I'm assuming that somewhere along the line, it'll be pointed out that a black bear should be black. I'm also assuming the mascot will only have one outfit. The athletic department had nothing to do with this process until this point. Now they take it over.

Normally that would worry me, but our marketing has improved dramatically since this Michael Thompson guy has taken over, and he's going to have a heavy hand in the process.

A bear is a bear. It's a mascot. I too have a hard time seeing what's stupid about it. Let me ask you though pat, since you're the expert, what would've been not stupid?

the bear had no historical connection to Ole Miss, and I didn't contend
that it did. He said it was "generic." I understand that Ole Miss
getting a new mascot is a huge deal for State fans, but if you're going
to be critical perhaps calling any other mascot "generic" when yours is a
Bulldog isn't the best approach.

for you there's a dictionary, and that's not what generic means. "Bulldogs" are as generic as it gets. Does it have some basis in history/tradition for State? Absolutely. Does that make it any less generic? Of course not. "Historic" is not an antonym for "generic." LSU's "Tigers" have a different historical basis than Auburn's, but "Tigers" is still pretty damn generic.

Then I guess it should be the Mississippi State University Canis Lupus.

Oh wait, that is generic too.

It's 2010, ya'll could have been far more creative. There is nothing creative about bears. This is not the 20s where simply naming an animal is clever. Although out of the 3 choices, Bears would have been #1 for me.

You really can't be that naive, can you. The fix has been in for a while. This was a huge step towards the University of Mississippi becoming politically correct.
First the sticks, then the flag, Dixie, Col. Reb, now the Bears. Next is the final name change within the next 5-10 years to the Mississippi Bears..

as far as it being uncreative. The best thing we could have done was go back to "The Flood" in the mid-90s when the effort began to distance Ole Miss from its ugly racial history, but that didn't happen. The bear was the only thing that made sense of the 3. The landshark was ridiculous especially in light of the way our defense has played this year, and we deserve a refund from whoever thought Hotty Toddy was a good idea.

somebody kill that red herring running around!

And rebels are not generic? Let's see... You have confederates, James dean, Protestants in 15th century England, and pasty skinned 28 year olds with eyebrow rings in moms basement playing world of Warcraft while yelling he will come to dinner when he is damn good and ready. How's that for generic?

So what was the arguement again?

thanks for playing indeed. Is that what Dan jones sent you back when you sent the nasty e mail to him as old man Reb's funeral was being planned? Now you need to hurry and get on the "it's for the kids!" bandwagon.

look I'm sorry your mascot search has been an embarassing mess. But you don't have to try to mask the obvious with a ******** "generic" arguement.
