I was never that excited about Buh to begin with.

We'll have the summer to work someone else in.

No big deal...

I'm sure that it's happened before in the history of college football but can't think of an example where a coach voluntarily left during the middle of Spring practice.
Southern Miss head coach left last month to become an NFL assistant

Buh was an acceptable coach, good recruiter, and very well respected on the team. He has great football knowledge, and wanted to take a promotion. Assistants shift every year, it happens. They have their own careers and lives too. If you had the opportunity to become a defensive coordinator in the Big 10 to coach with your friend, would you stay as a special teams coach? I doubt many of you would.

On Maryland's side of things, I don't understand it. Buh's defense's was horrendous at Nevada and Cal. Had little major control of the defense here, so I doubt anything has changed scheme-wise in what he brings to the table. They wanted him BAD, and I don't really understand why. Good for him though.

As far as UK's side of things, we're fine. Luckily, we have a coach that is well connected in the NCAA, and has been able to pull in exactly who he has wanted since the time he got to UK. We will upgrade from Buh, just like we've upgraded in the majority of coaching staff moves since he's gotten here. As long as we can find a guy to cover the Georgia area and is a respectable coach, there will be little to no drop off.

Everybody can be replaced, no question. But for Buh/UK here's why this sucks...he was an experienced OLB coach coaching UK's young but gifted crew of OLBs. They could've benefited from his experience. Likewise he was the dedicated STs coach who had spent a great deal of the spring implementing new schemes...now that's gone. Plus he'd spent the past several months traveling Georgia as UK's man on the ground there. UK will find a good replacement, may take awhile.

As for why Maryland wanted Buh, apparently he and the HC have a long time connection.

Durkin and Buh coached together under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.

My question is where is MB and the money? Barney surely could afford a few hundred K to prevent some of this. Bad timing for UK. Hope they get a super replacement. Hope Barney lets go of some cash for fball. Oh! Maybe he hopes for reducing staff size. He is into that!

Yeah. Pretty sure money wasn't the issue. Dude just upgraded to DC in a power 5 conference.

It's clear that some of you revel in the doom and gloom, so I'll leave it to you.

When things are going terribly it's not called doom and gloom, it's called being realistic..some of you act like the fans are second guessing Nick Saban or something..until Stoops does anything more than bring in marginally better recruiting classes than we're used to the second guessing is more than warranted

His Dad knows as much as anyone how much of a business football is now. His kid is not going to get an offer from UK and he has been visiting a circuit of schools lately. It is simply a business decision to send him to a school and area that gives him more exposure. Happens all of the time.
As I understand it, UK coaches' kids get free UK tuition & R&B, so he gets a free UK ride regardless if Stoops offers. Net, he can walk on at UK for free. Now if he's more interested in PT, then more exposure is right with UK as a fallback.

Marginally better? Stoops cut loose like 25 Joker recruits and 1 went to another division 1 school. Legree was a special team player at South Florida just like here.

sucks, just was reading on the great things he was setting up as official full time special teams coordinator

Its tough when one of your coaches decides to move on, but if they are good at their job and wanting to move up the ladder from position coach to coordinator and eventually head coach it happens. Accept it and move on to the next guy. I am not sure the timing is bad. First you don't want it to happen in fall camp or right before and having to scramble to just fill the slot, or during the season. You certainly don't want to see it happen in January right before signing day. Spring practice isn't great, but the numbers are down because most of the frosh haven't arrived and the grads are already gone, so the numbers won't be to off and non coaching position staff member can step in and be on field until a full time hire is made. And you don't have to scramble and can take your time finding the right guy to replace him. No time is a good time, but this is really a bad time.

Is Buh going to finish spring ball, or has he already left ? Apparantly he was our lead recruiter in Georgia, maybe someone who has ties to the Peach state !

Stoops does appear to be very good at picking coaches that other high level programs want. Seems to me UK should throw a little more money and enticements at the fball staff. Is this unreasonable?

Gran has experience as a ST coordinator. I like Buh and don't blame him for taking a DC job. Good luck to him. If Eliot don't get his act together, maybe Buh will be back in a year or 2 anyway. Don't forget, we have a head coach of the offense now. Stoops can afford to be more hands on with the D. We'll make it through this [winking]

I am more worried about the D side of the ball than the O side !

Ah, the ever popular Mark Nelson mention

Currently DC with Ottawa Redblacks (there's a mascot name for ya!) in the Canadian Football League, age 60.

If performance by his players count for anything he deserves a mention.

We haven't had return teams that were anywhere near the threat that Mark Nelson return teams were.

Mark Nelson (2001-2002)

ST scoring (7 TDs)
First Team All-SEC Special Teams Players (2 players both years here)
First Team All-American (1)

Since (2003-2015)

ST scoring (9 TDs)
First Team All-SEC Special Teams Players (2-1 year each)
First Team All-American (0)

And in his journeyman career he has turned special teams around about anywhere he went.

To me though, he makes STs a threat which it hadn't been since. You all realize the last time we scored on a punt return was 2010 by Cobb-only one that season and KO's 2009 by Derrick Locke.

That's 60 games w/o a ST score.

Mark Nelson never got shut out while here and after he left ST sank and sputtered for the next eight years and has been flatlined the last five.

That's why I think he deserves at least a mention.

And before you say well he had Derrick Abney and DA was an incredible player ... Remember Rich Brooks had DA as well and under RB his STdropped to one score from 6 the previous year under Nelson.

Buh had just got bumped in pay so I would think Maryland will be cutting us a check for the next couple years. Got to think money won't be an object at this point. We have invested so much the last few years and recruiting has been historically great with word that 2018 may be their best class.

I think they go after someone stoops knows and trust. Too many good vibes with this staff to go outside the circle too far. Take the money we get from Maryland to pay for our new coaches buyout and let's do work.

How the h does anyone know such?

Because its the middle of spring. Concepts and schemes are being installed. Plus he was running an interesting competition to see who would be on ST. Now the rest of the spring will be wasted for ST.

Not exactly an area where we performed well as is.

It's hilarious no one that's now folding the tent was talking about Buh being one of our better assistants until he leaves for a better job then it's a crippling blow to Stoops tenure.
You people are greatly exaggerating the effect that this has on special teams. Buh was given the ST coordinator title to justify paying him more because he was offered a ST coordinator position a few months ago. Resposibilties were largely the same as they were a year ago when there was no ST coordinator. We have a QC assistant that coaches our specialists and is very good at it.
The only player Buh has gained a commitment from is the 2 star LB. We have plenty of time to find another recruiter for Georgia and pick up where Buh left off down there. Our class is already almost complete so the next coach will mostly be working on the 2018 class when he comes in. As far as recruiting goes the timing of this loss couldn't be much better.
What we did lose is a very good LB coach. The OLB group is young, inexperienced, and will be asked to step up their game a lot this year. They will need very good coaching and that's what we lost in Buh. Beyond that we didn't lose nearly as much as the agenda driven posters in this thread want you to believe.
The timing sucks because we are in the middle of spring ball. Stoops will likely have to finish up the last two weeks short an assistant and have Eliot coach the inside and outside backers while he looks for a replacement. Will Stoops consider hiring Bo Pelini as OLB coach and Co-DC? If Stoops can bring in a good coach and recruiter losing Buh could work out to be a situation just as good or better than before. There's no sense in getting worked up until we know the replacement

I really hate losing coach Buh especially after reading the recent article about how he was handloing the special teams this spring. But this offseason has shown me that Stoops can bring in good coaches so I will wait and see who buhs' replacement is before crying about his loss. But the smart a&$ in me just has to be the first person on here to comment "Buh bye" LOL

Better now than fall camp. Buh becomes the D.C. at a State school in a power 5 conference, I can't fault him. Understand coach Buh is popular with our young and I believe talented outside linebacker corps.. With our new coach of the offense/o.c. maybe it's time for Coach Stoops to devote his defensive experience to linebackers and special teams!

Schlarman has had zero talent to work with. He has that now. He deserves to still be here. Buh's timing is bad but we aren't losing much recruiting wise. We'll be alright.

Buh hasn't set the world on fire recruiting wise that's for sure.

Schlarman has had some talent to work with especially compared to lesser schools who have a much better OL than we do. If your comparing to the Clemson's, Bama's etc yes our talent stinks.

Don't know how he would be with special teams, but there is a pretty Damn good LB coach at Boyle County named Chuck Smith...he coached some pretty Damn good lbers while here

Jmo, but there's a reason why he's in high school and not the SEC. No harm intended

That thought had crossed my mind also.

And was that "buh bye" or "bye Buh"? Good catch either way.
