I think this thing could grow some legs. Mike Anderson just turned Georgia down and inked a new deal with Missouri. He had to be one of the front runners for the Memphis job as well. ESPN only threw out 2 more names besides Anderson and that was Tim Floyd at USC and Andy Kennedy. I think he will get serious consideration for the opening , and does already recruit the market.

It'd be a questionable PR move to hire a coach that's getting ready to go to trial in a few weeks. That's the main reason I doubt they'll make a real push for him.

You had better hope so. I doubt Pete wants to come off the $$$ it appears is necessary to hire a good coach in the SEC now, especially after giving Nutt the big raise.

Pete definitely wouldn't bring out the money for that. I really am surprised that they would consider AK before Stans though.

Others with similar backgrounds who immediately come to mind: Lon Kruger and Larry Brown.

Speaking of your coaches, I heard a rumor from someone with connections to USM while at the SEC Tournament that Larry Eustachy was going to resign and some boosters were going to push Owen Miller for the job. Have you heard anything along those lines? I'm assuming it was BS since Southern's season has been over for a while now and nothing has happened.

He's a coach that "plays the game" to get the top recruits. His problem is that he's not a great bench coach, similar to Calipari. Of course, at Memphis, all he'd have to do is assemble the talent like he's been getting at USC, and he'll go undefeated in CUSA, which will lead to 1, 2, or 3 seeds. Floyd would be able to follow a similar formula to what Cal was doing at Memphis. If they hire a coach that doesn't "play the game" for the very top level recruits, they'll have to rely on recruiting the best from the area (still not a bad deal), and coaching them to a high level.

except for the pending trial and having never been to the NCAA Tournament. If Memphis State wants to throw their money at Kennedy, it would piss off a lot of Tiger fans.

I fully expect Kennedy to leave Ole Miss in the next year or two, but would be shocked if it were this off-season. I would expect it very soon after he takes a team to the Dance.

knowing that Memphis took a coach away from you, you know, them being "Tiger High" and all.

Calipari actually is a good bench coach. Believe it or not his guys aren't just street-balling. Be prepared for UK to start to give the rest of us hell once again.

Eventually, Calipari will get it going if he does not get UK on probation but next season will be a rude awakening for him if Meeks or Patterson leave. Don't forget that Houston was one of the better teams in C-USA and we beat them by 30.

You sound like all of the Ole Miss fans around my office. Before the Memphis mention, you ask a Rebel and they would say that all of this leagal stuff is just going to go away and there is nothing to it. Post-Memphis mention, every Rebel in my office is echoing your statement that it would be a bad move to hire a coach with legal problems.

I agree. I don't think Calipari is a bad bench coach. I just think he's very average. He has his one style that he likes to run, and if you find a way to stop it, he struggles to make an adjustment. Part of that may be due to the fact that he's had teams that are so much more talented than his typical opposition (CUSA), that it didn't matter what opposing coaches did, they couldn't slow Memphis down. In the SEC, he'll still land a ton of talent, and he'll still put together good teams, but he'll find the going a lot rougher, because there will be teams that have enough athletes and good enough coaching to stop him.

Missouri is a good example this year. They had a style and gameplan that countered Memphis well. In no way did they have the more talented team, but Calipari was unable to adjust to stop what Missouri was doing.

He's decent as a bench coach. He's just not great, and he'll be middle of the road in the SEC as far as pure coaching ability. Fortunately for him, he'll be near the top in talent, because he plays the recruiting game so well.
