there are doctors saving lives, that dont come near that. The economy is struggling and we have athletes making that much.....something just dont seem right about that..

Rather, we get paid based on replacability. Teachers and police officers work is obviously of way more value than Pujols' athletic ability.

But there are tens of thousands new teachers and police officers every single year. A Pujols-like talent comes around every quarter century.

Somewhere there is the best teacher in the country or the best police officer. The only problem is nobody wants to pay to see them do their job. If people stopped watching and buying jerseys it wouldn't matter what he could do. They get paid that much because somebody thinks they can make that (plus some) from them. </p>

If that makes it any better for you. I agree that it's asinine, but it's a business decision. Actually gamble is probably a more appropriate term since Pujols will be collecting social security when the contract term is up.
