All joking aside, all I can think of seeing a plane upside down and basically intact on the runway is can you imagine walking away from that? Don't know what my state of mind would be and what it would be for the rest of my life. Talk about ... but for the grace of God ....

When they say fasten seatbelts and chairbacks straight up, there's a reason for that. Incredible everyone survived and only a few injuries.

Most of the time the passengers can survive the impact it's the explosion that gets them.

Speaking of landing upside down:

Back when I used to fly an air demo in the F-4 at the London International Airshow for about 6-8 consecutive years in London, Ontario, this guy was there one of the years I flew. He would take off and land upside down. When the aircraft was stopped on the ground upside down, he had a winch that would raise him up (or lower him down to the ground) into the cockpit so he could then fasten his seatbelt and be strapped in the airplane. Once in the airplane, he would start the engine, taxi out, and take off upside down and then do his airshow routine.

I definitely would have schitt my pants. I hate to fly. I know they say it's the safest form of travel but when something happens it's bad

It’s safer but you have no control, you are powerless to stop whatever is happening other than hope everyone keeps their cool which may not even help.

People die more frequently driving a car but it feels safer because you are used to doing it and you feel in control but the truth is, you are only partially in control.

Your brain is playing tricks on you.

I am not an expert but I did sleep better last night.

Oh, that parr about it being safer only applies to commercial flights. Private flights? They about as safe as riding a motorcycle but if you are your own private pilot, it’s usually your fault when you die.

World of difference between private flights flown by professional pilots versus hobbyists. Private jets are about as safe as commercial jets (very few owners piloting their own jets; usually it's professional pilots and they have good training and maintenance programs). Turbo props with professional pilots are not quite as safe but still considerably safer than travel by car. Prop planes in general it's really going to be case by case. General Aviation as a group is going to be much less safe, but I think that's still driven by hobbyists and old airplanes.

I suspect that a prop plane on a good maintenance schedule with a full time pilot is probably going to be a good bit safer than driving provided it's not for a purpose that tends to attract less risk averse pilots (say maybe bush pilots or crop dusters? Just guessing there that they may be more prone to push the envelope).

Craziest thing I've heard so far was w/in an hour or two of it happening. A guy (one of their so called "experts") was being interviewed on ABC and said that it was "apparent" that it had tumbled over side to side because both wings were ripped off w/ most of the fuel going w/ them in their tanks. With the little bit of fire they had right where the wings were formerly attached he said it would have been a major disaster if those wings/tanks w/ fuel were still attached when it came to a stop w/ the fire blazing. Got to be some video out there somewhere of it flipping around because they had advanced warning from the plane to alert fire and rescue on the tape I heard.

It has become a pleasure every evening to go to YouTube and watch her rip them a new a-hole at her daily briefings. She is just so damn prepared when she takes the podium, she's got notes, photos, documents and that's only if she needs them. She seldom even reads anything she just puts it out there from general knowledge.

The difference in her and her predecessor is remarkable

Agreed but **** happens:

Private pilots get out of practice and/or fly into bad weather and die at an extremely high rate even with a well maintained plane. The keys are like you said with maintenance but weather is as well and that part is what killed many a private pilot. You can control that stuff a lot more than a motorcycle can as they mostly get killed by someone running over them.

Most crashes happen during the first 500 hrs of a pilots flight time. Then few crashes between 500-2000.

Funny thing, once a pilot has 2000 hrs of flying they tend to start crashing at a higher rate again. Why? I never understood it, Complacency or need for speed? What's happening?
