New Jersey right handed pitcher Victor Diaz committed today. Had interest from Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, BC and some other northeast schools. Tops out at 89.

This one was given away when Gene said he grew three inches over the summer. I think this guy is going to be a project.

I'd much rather this go to Vito Perna.

You've never heard of a teenager growing three inches over the summer?

How do we end up with a guy from so far away that isn't a national recruit?

I know nothing about him, but if he tops out at 89 and may be a project....why?

If we're not beating out LSU for a player, people get worried. He's 6-1 and 190 now. He'll probably be 6-2 and 200 when he hits campus. He tops out at 89 and that can go up once they work with his mechanics and get him on a good strength program. Plus, he's not our normal white guy from Germantown, TN. I see it as a recruiting plus from that angle as well.

what's up with an era over 3 in high school?...what happened to those days when the best ones hovered in the 1.3 range? strike out per inning?...what about 1.5 of so?....

project...but what the hell....

just not sure why we are after a guy that far away with unspectacular numbers and only with current offers from St. John's and Seton Hall given how limited we supposedly are for scholarships next year. I guess I will just have to defer to Cohen and staff on this one.

It may be true, but at any rate, this is a guy with a ERA of 3.30 and he had fewer strikeouts to innings pitched.

...in recent years gut instink on something like this would have been dead on.

To be devil's advocate here, the same things were said about Nick Routt if memory serves correct.

This ain't Croom signing Ty Evans. This is a proven winner making an evaluation. I'm willing to give him enough rope to hang himself.

Edit: From Routt's profile on Mstateathletics.com: "Compiled a 4-1 mark with a 3.80 earned run average and a staff-leading 40 strikeouts in 23-2/3 innings." Granted he produced more K's, but those aren't exactly eye popping numbers.

Good point. Jonathan Papelbon had a 3.41 ERA in High school. Also Chris Young, who was drafted in the 18th round, had a 3.15 ERA in High School. We have had some very good pitchers over the years without incredible ERAs in high school. And we have had some guys with some ridiculously low ERA's end up being terrible. You can't always project these kids soley on high school stats.

I'm sorry but there's no way we were able to do a proper evaluation on this guy. This one is definitely a head scratcher.

What is a "proper evaluation"? I'm curious.

And it's not like we didn't check him out with two people who Cohen knew and had worked with before.
