One of his coaches was talking about two great base-stealers, Joe Morgan and Rickey Henderson. He said Morgan was quick, but not fast. He said Henderson was fast, but not quick. He said Hamilton was both quick and fast. He said the only reason he gets caught at all is that he still needs to polish his base-stealing technique and learn to study pitchers more. Hamilton is still raw (look at the errors) but the athleticism is off the charts.
A lot of it is knowing when to steal, how to read pitchers, the catchers behind home plate, the situation, and whether you are going to take the bat out of the hitter's hands if you steal.
Having heard Joe Morgan speak about baseball on ESPN, I have to think that any issues he had with base stealing were mental.
