For those who support Greg or somehow believe he is a good HC,. What imare your feelings or excuse on consecutive DC searches being completely butchered?

My money is on Schiano himself. He will sell it as he is the best DC he's ever met. Best case is it would save a few million for the buy out.

It better be him, himself, if the alternatives are only Robb Smith types. Zinn should put her foot down on allowing us to fund a contract for someone like that. No matter how ineffective he is, “free” would be better than paying millions for someone bad.

For the first time in his career at Rutgers he’s finally being managed appropriately.

I presume this means the athletic department is now viewing their position as Schiano needs Rutgers more than Rutgers needs Schiano….but curious what you mean?

Schiano is done. Let him “earn” some his unwarranted salary and manage the Defense in his last season.

It's no secret Schiano was able to run roughshod over the dept. during his entire tenure here, that is up until now. With a new AD who was handpicked by the new President, the power structure has changed dramatically, especially when you consider the President's answer to the expectations of the department being a one word answer. "Win".

Schiano isn't winning on the field or off. A big part of head coaches success is ability to bring people in that will help. Saban was a master at it. He was a task master but it all lead to winning. Schiano is almost the opposite. AD Zinn's only challenge will be getting boosters who are loyal to Schiano to be loyal to Rutgers. If she can tap new sources for money which she's obviously laser focused on doing, even that won't help protect Schiano. He either needs to win or AD Zinn is going to do what every AD in the country wants to do- make their own hires, especially in football and basketball.

I am so happy we started another thread on this.
I'm kind of unironically happy about it tbh. Unfortunately it's the biggest story around the program at the moment. Shows people: 1) still care; 2) are getting sick of every coordinator search dragging on like this. Now we can only hope this one gets a better resolution than last year's, but growing less confident in that by the day.

We have a DC

It's Greg.

But, like most announcements he makes, he is waiting until the last possible minute to tell us all.

This. We've had the DC all along.

"After a thorough process and vetting of candidates, I've delighted to announce I've hired the best defensive coordinator I know. Me".

The irony is - if he did come out and say exactly that, it would actually look way “less bad” (and it would be pretty awful) than anything he could come up with to say about selecting a Fraser type at this juncture. So if he really doesn’t have someone in the pipeline it could in fact come to this.

There is no way to shine this shate. If he appointed himself on day one he could have saved face. But to play this out 2 months from end of season and nearly 3 months from when Robb was truly fired shows what many have speculated. Can’t allegedly bring in more than 5 candidates only to settle on yourself.

Yeah it would look ridiculous, but not quite as ridiculous as naming someone like Frasier who hasn’t held more than a fluff job in many many years. It’d be worse even than Robb Smith who arguably at least technically had a pretty decent season as our DC in 2020 (compared to RU 2019 defense) and as DC in 2022 at Duke. Plus he named his as co-DC paired to an up and comer on paper. I’m not saying it wasn’t a horrible hire (obviously we know the outcome but Fraser (or someone like him which is all that’s left of his network) would be so much worse.

At least if he named himself, he’d be a) saving money and b) basically saying that he wasn’t impressed enough by what he saw in the interview process to spend the money because he thinks he can do it better himself. It arguably might be the truth as we don’t know the candidates he brought in. If they are awful, well then free is always better than awful and costing millions.

The thing is not being impressed is more damaging to Greg’s status in the coaching world and hierarchy His job is to make sure he has a competent staff. And part of that is compiling a list of viable candidates when you have openings. It’s not like he was surprised by the DC leaving. He fired him after the Oregon game. He has had months to make a hire.

And let's assume he will be the DC. Why haven't the 2 or 3 defensive staff position coaches been filled yet?

Ding ding ding… There are very few coaches that have dual roles. And even less that are successful in wearing multiple hats. Thats the problem we ran into hiring Gleeson. He wasn’t the play caller at Oklahoma state. Was OC in title only.

Take Texas- according to many- Sark is still the real OC. But that is my point- Greg has not even promoted an assistant into the position. That would sort of be the norm when a HC "plans" on being the coordinator.

this tells me- the "plan" was not to have Greg be the DC and he has struck out completely.

Agreed. And that was my point as well. If Greg wanted to and the plan all along was to be the dc he would have gotten ahead of this debacle. He would have hired assistants and named himself DC the day after the season ended. Instead we all witnessed what transpired.

So what are other DCs and staffs doing this time of year? Sitting on the beach somewhere? Or are they analyzing portal players and other productive tasks?

I dont believe there isn't any harm in not having a defensive staff for such a long period of time.

Why can't he just go into the MAAC or SunBelt and hire one of those best DCs available? give a pay raise and an opportunity to coach in the BIG, you're hired. done deal
