RUTrumpet made a great point in another thread.

If we hire Golden, our fan base will be extremely divided on DAY 1 of the hire.

That is not what we want.

No other coaching candidate has raised as much animosity and anger as Golden.

Why would RU's admin want to have half the fan base lashing out and lamenting the hire on Day 1, and counting the years until Golden is gone?

Will donors pony up with Golden?
Will season ticket sales increase or decrease?
Will fans and recruits be EXCITED by the hire?

The answers are obviously no.

Mullen or Ash.
Has to be.

No worries, the fanbase will be 99% united after the first couple games. The "fire Golden or I'll cancel my 393 season tix after 700 years emails" would be flowing fast and furious.

no. Whoever becomes the next Rutgers head football coach, whether or not Golden. will galvanize the school's fanbase behind him, or they are not true fans.

Really, no matter who it is, every true fan will say it was a good hire? You can't think of any possible hires that would leave you scratching your head? We will all hope the next coach is successful, but that's pretty extreme.

No real professional team's fans would ever boo their team's first round draft pick, either, right?

Totally nonsensical. Even people who don't like the hire are not going to boycott watching Rutgers football, and if the product is worth watching, then everything will be fine. Even our bizarre fans wouldn't be so crazy and stupid as to prefer to be right about the coaching hire rather than see Rutgers win games.

I think ...

But this board would be divided and that's what counts. Right?

Kyle "don't call me Tom" Brady was booed by true Jet fans at the '95 draft. Turned out they were right.Waste of a 1st round pick.

Isn't a realistic candidate that won't divide the fan base. Even Mullen would be met with "lets see him do it without Prescott posts"
Maybe so about Mullen, but 90% of this board (I imagine) would be enthusiastic about that hire. Clearly, the number for a Golden hire is far lower than that, and the negative side is pretty passionate about it.

Fans are allowed to dislike coaches, AD's, administrators, players, or just about anyone associated with a program. It's their right. Schools and football programs are a lot bigger than any select group of individuals. Rutgers has had football for 150 years prior to the arrival of your next coach, and will for several generations after he leaves.

This "you have to rally around X, or else you're not a true fan" garbage gets really old and is frankly an un-American opinion to hold. It's the definition of fascism.

absurd! Some people here do not like any name mention, we even had people post that they didn't want Les Miles or Mark Richt for crying out loud.

So no matter who gets hired the negatoids will bash them and proclaim them the worse hire ever, the realistic people who give him a chance and the postivoids will contract an artist to build them a statue.

That is just this board!

In real life most people will support whoever is hired until they no longer have a reason to.

This post nails it.
Sure, people might grumble a little bit about Mullen, or Ash, or whomever is hired.

My point is far fewer people will passionately hate on Mullen or Ash.

Golden – forget about it!

Half the fans would want him fired from DAY 1!

And don’t tell me the people doing the hiring should entirely ignore the wishes of the fans. Those fans are the ones who will buy tickets (or not), donate (or not) and will passionately support the school (or not) by their actions, word of mouth, clothing attire, etc.

Those conducting the interviews will obviously learn more about the candidates than the fans currently know, but you cannot pull the rug over the fans’ eyes when they have seen crap coaching for years at the U.

Don’t tell me the ‘culture’ wasn’t right for Golden down there.

Either you know how to coach and lead a team, or you don’t.

And it’s painfully obvious Golden cannot coach.

People say he is such a great recruiter. How was his recruiting at Temple? At UVA?

At the U, much of the local talent WANTS to go to the school, regardless of who the coach is.

Rutgers needs a guy who can COACH first and foremost, then recruit.

By all accounts out of Columbus, Ash can do BOTH.

So why settle for a guy who MIGHT be able to recruit somewhat better than Flood (I think he is damage goods and it will be VERY easy to recruit negatively against him)?

Hire a guy who is PASSIONATE about coaching football, and turn these kids into men both on and off the field!

Golden ain’t gonna cut it, people!

I generally agree with this topic. Golden is extremely polarizing. Someone like Ash or a less well-known coordinator, or a head coach who has not been a coach at a p5 school is not going to polarize the fan base. He'll be met with a cautious optimism from most, and a minority of skeptics who had their heart set on someone else. But few if any will outright hate the new coach.

If it's Golden, who people know well, there will be a vocal group who immediately disdain him and a much more negative vibe in the fan base.

Of course, if he coaches well in his first year, the haters will be pretty quiet. So if you're convinced for certain that he'll win you hire him anyway (though I'm not sure how anyone could be so convinced after he just failed at a school thats much easier to recruit to than RU and in a weaker league). But if it doesn't go well in year one and continues to go poorly in year 2, we're going to be back to Flood-levels of vitriol from the fans and plenty people will be out for blood in a hurry. Again, if you're sure he's gonna succeed you hire him anyway even if a lot of the fans don't like it, but it's a "riskier" move IMO because a lot of people will have a quick trigger finger on the "Fire Golden" movement if he struggles.

I am sitting on the runway adjusting my goggles - ready to take off, and the FIRE GOLDEN!!! banner is lying on the runway...

Oh, and I DO need a hug. From my new boy, Chris ASH!!!

the patients running the asylum.....

No, the paying customers and boosters.
And that's the way it should be to an extent.

If Rutgers doesn't put a good product on the field, fans will stay away and not buy tickets.

Why bite the hand that feeds you?
Why piss off half the fanbase?
Would make no sense.
