Stans knows that he has the personnel to be pretty good over the next couple of seasons. He is probably making sure that he has some leverage when payday approaches.
coaches normally get 4 year extensions anyway to help with recruiting. for instance, barnes got 4 years shortly before he was fired
Stans thinks that he's got a good team coming up. He expects some big things to happen in the next couple of years and wants the next round of contract negotiations to come up soon afterward.
I think it is Byrne mitigating risk as much as possible should Stansbury's team tank and he is forced to fire Stansbury. By doing it this way, should Stansbury win big he is rewarded nicely but at the same time should his team tank, Byrne doesnt have a 3 or so years of a contract to continue to pay on when the new guy comes on board......
Cohen has built-in advantages that Stans doesn't. Your baseball team has a history of excellence and a fan base that is second to none. Your facilities, while old, are still top notch. In basketball it's all a completely different story.

Let's say that the baseball equivalent of a Sweet 16 is a Super Regional. That would mean that we would stall out in the regionals every year. I know we can do better than that in baseball.
I'm not sure that at this time it's realistic for MSU basketball to win a NC. And I do know that it's very different in basketball becase of the sudden death of the NCAA Tourney and the fact that normally, you don't get to play in your home ballpark like you can do in baseball, which is a huge difference, but still.

he has plenty of talent coming up out of hte high school ranks to reload on. I wouldn't pull the trigger on him anytime soon unless this season is a complete flop or something more serious happens off the court.
This maybe the best team he has ever had and will ever have but there are still plenty of opportunities ahead with the talent coming through for him to recruit another team just as talented and deep.
I disagree with Coach on just about everything. As we sit here facing a 1-11 football season and probably being picked last again in the SEC in baseball, we should thank our lucky stars that we even have a coach on campus that has actually done something and is not currently surviving on hope and hype. Byrne is shrewd but he ain't stupid. Stansbury is not going anywhere whether we make the Sweet 16 or not. How damn dumb would MSU look for getting rid of a guy that goes probably around 24-6 but loses in the second round of the NCAAs?

Bowers averaged more TO's but did have a half assist more per game. Bowers also barely shot better that season than Bost did last year as a true Freshman. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Bost has some solid improvement in his 2nd year and has a better year than Bowers. It wont take much improvement at all for him to do that
Frasier > Stewart???
Stewart was better from 3 pt range this past season- Frasier shot a robust 33%...they are about equal from the line. Point and rebounds are close as well.
Roberts > Varnado??
on defense, its not even close, so I wont go into that. Roberts was a better offensive player though, but his numbers arent that much greater- 4 points a game.

The team we have now has the potential to be just as good but they have not proved it yet. Frazier was twice the defensive player that Stewart is and could finish at the basket as well as hit threes. Plus he came off the bench alot so he did not play as many minutes as Barry. Varnado obviously is one of a kind blocking shots but Roberts could score, rebound, and play physical defense and was an All-American. Bowers was one of our all time greats and in the clutch was money. Bost possibly will eclipse everything Bowers did but he has a ways to go.
Don't get me wrong, this team we have has unlimited potential but I won't put them ahead of that team until they actually do something.

As a true Freshman, Bost statistically was a wash with Bowers as a Senior...Timmy was better with his on the ball D, but Bost is going to improve in that area each year he plays. As a PG, you really have to be impressed that Bost, as a Freshman, had the same Assist/TO ratio that Bowers did as a Senior. I mean, that is probably the number 1 thing you look at in your PG. And, common sense would suggest that Bost is going to be a good bit better in his 2nd year on the college level.
So after pretty much matching Bowers numbers as a true Freshman, most people would rationalize that Bost will most likely improve on his numbers in year 2- and should he do that, will have a better year than Bowers.

but its from the Center position. You are probably better off comparing Kodi to Roberts defensively. Roberts was pretty good defensively, and we all know Kodi needs to work harder in this area. But if you look back to the Washington game last year, Kodi was the most physical player we had that day in the paint. The skills are there for him to get it done.
Bottom line- it goes back to what I initially said- this year's team is more talented and has more depth. 2003 had good players and great chemistry- and that means alot. But 2003 went one and done in March- and that cant be forgotten either. 2009 will be a tremendous disappointment if they go one and done- regardless of what they do in the SEC

is intimidating in his own way, but he's not going to bring the pain. I think you need a guy to do the dirty work, to make the other team pay the price.

that Bowers playing out of position in his first year at point was a statistical tie with a true point guard. How many last second game winners or game tying shots did bost have last year? I am VERY impressed with Bost, but I think you are out of your gourd if you think he will be better as a Soph than Bowers was as a Senior. Also, in reference to a previous post...Do you really think Kodi is NBA Caliber? Is that when he is inside you or all the time?
As to Kodi, you are probably one of the dumbasses that said Walter Sharpe wasnt that good either huh? I'm sure you were probably in the "we didnt need him anyway" crowd. Bost will be a better PG as a Soph than Bowers was as a Senior. Fewer TO's, as many or more assists, and as good or better shooting percentage to go along with improved defense = better PG. You can love and adore Timmy all you want, but Bost is going to go down as one of the best PG's to play here- if not THE best.
