Transferring to ground zero. Mama ought to find plenty of "action" in those stands.

What would the Blue Jays have to say about that?

No idea how these arrangements work in MLB, but if I sign a contract with a prospect and agree to let him play football, I'm writing it in such a way where he's entering the farm system the minute he stops playing football - that includes sitting out a year because he's decided to transfer schools. Of course, this is assuming his name is cleared. There's the legal stuff the guy will be going through as well...

Spoke with a Petal coach this AM. Alford is headed north, according to what

Alford told him.

The arrest was made as Alford tried to break up a fight. This guys says the security tapes show what happened, the charges have been reduced, and will probably be dropped altogether.

Big pick-up for you guys.

In all seriousness, why in the world would he do this? I know he had his trouble in H'burg, but they are about to hire an offensive head coach probably. He'd have to sit out a year and almost certainly change positions.

My guess it's a simple case of they had the best offer last year and they are giving him the best now and it's a grab the cash and run scenario that more than likely ends up with him showing up for fall camp, sitting out a year and then 50/50 at best if he ever shows up again.

Why would Ole Miss want Alford?

I understand rumors, but this one just doesn't make any sense. Wallace is a going to be a junior, Brunetti will be a Junior, and they have Buchanan and Kinkaid coming in. What in the world would OM do with Alford and why would Afford want to go sit the bench when he could go play baseball full-time and be in the big leagues in 3 years?

Some of you think in a vaccuum. I can think of a number of ways an athlete like Alford could help a football team outside the QB position.

Did you see #2 on Kansas State's defense making plays everywhere the other night? Justin Tuggle, former QB recruit of Croom's, converted to LB and now may have an NFL future. You people get WAY too fixated on 'needs' and specific positions. Teams need football players.

Good chance he's as overrated in baseball as he was in football. It's very hard to project high school players. There are a lot of phenoms who never even get close to the majors. It's a small sample, but he batted .167 in 18 at bats in the minors this summer. If he's splitting time between football and baseball, he'll never get anywhere near his potential in either. Then add character issues on top of that and I agree with you, why would UM want him. Unless maybe he was walking on.

Southern's a terrible situation for him. They gave him the world and let him run the show. Probably another issue that contributed to Johnson's demise. That whole deal never even got off the ground. You can't offer the world to these recruits, especially the hometown guys like this. Offering high school coaches positions on the staff is beyond retarded. Good ole boy ********. Have to be bigger than that.

If Alford is thinking clearly, he probably should go to MLB full time, and if that doesn't work out, come back to college somewhere. But he's not because he's been coddled his whole life. He damn sure needs to get out of the pine belt though.

Southern's not bigger than that. It wasn't much of a reach to hire Alford's coach as a position coach. He had already been a college coach before and that seems like a reasonable place to get a position coach when you're not paying a ton. The problem is when they lost their offensive coordinator, they should have gone and found a coordinator, not promoted the guy the borderline position coach. They should have sucked it up and poached an OC from somebody. Even if they had to overpay, it would have been a hell of a lot cheaper than the debacle they had this year.

Yep a 3.2 million one-year dollar debacle.

thanks ... that always bothered me. If (I know- never begin a sentence with a preposition) AA were trying to come here I'm sure there would be just cause **

Maybe I'm missing the sarcasm, but "if" is not a preposition bro. Also, it's completely fine to begin a sentence with a preposition. Example: Of the grammar discussions on this board, I find this one the most informative. The rule is that you can't end a sentence with a preposition.

I don't think the arrest last week was Alford's first brush with the law, do a

little digging.

I guess I fail to see the "big pickup". A guy who couldn't get it done on an 0-12 CUSA team is supposed to make an impact at an SEC school (with 1337473 qbs)?

He is not D-1 QB material but he is a hell of an athlete. In the right spot, he can make a difference. I wish we had him.
