2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Anthony Dixon, RB, Mississippi St.
Dixon is only a junior, but he already has a ton of experience after almost three full seasons in Starkville. He played in 12 games as a freshman in 2006 - starting five times - and set school freshman records in just about everything. Dixon carried 169 times for 668 yards and nine touchdowns. He assumed the starting role as a sophomore and really exploded, amassing 1066 yards and 14 touchdowns on 287 rushes. Dixon also added 14 receptions for 167 yards and two more scores. Through nine games in 2008, his yards per carry average is up from 3.7 to 4.2, but his overall numbers are considerably down. The problem is that Dixon is not consistent enough and often disappears for entire games. That lack of consistency can be attributed to the fact that Dixon is not the kind of versatile running back that can make opposing defenders miss. He has decent speed (mid-4.5s in the 40-yard-dash), but he has to do most of his damage with his size (6'1'' and 240 pounds). He needs to run over people to get his yards, but that can be hard to do when the offensive line is not producing. Dixon can be an effective short-yardage back in the NFL (not an every-down kind) and would most likely go at some point on Day 2 of the 2009 draft. Still, the smart move is to go back to Mississippi State and hope to regain his sophomore form.
