Any great defenses out there?

I was just looking back at the regular season scores for Phoebus in both 2022 & 2023. They allowed a total of 30 points over 19 regular season games played (I believe Denbigh had to forfeit in 2022). That’s an unreal 1.58 points a game. Here are the Top 5 scoring defenses in the state this year:

Stone Bridge - 3.9 PPG
Huguenot - 4.1 PPG
Glenvar - 4.8 PPG
Armstrong - 4.9 PPG
Kettle Run - 5.0 PPG (9 games played)

My question is this. Does anyone feel there is a great defense that could carry a team to a State Championship? It doesn’t have to be a top scoring defense from a points allowed standpoint…Maybe a team that creates a ton of turnovers or completely stops the run or pass.

Is there something close to a 2022/2023 Phoebus-like team hiding out there?

But to answer your question, any and all 5 have strong enough defenses to carry them to state. Id be shocked if all 5 aren't either in the state final or at the least the final 4 of their respective divisions. All 5 have posted elite numbers

Glenvars D is great, but they also play in a run first oriented district and their out of district games are against heavy run oriented teams. Union and Graham play in a much more pass friendly region and schedule where teams throw it more compared to other regions in Class 2, so numbers can be deceiving. I'm not sold Glenvars defense is better than Unions or Grahams, even though their numbers are better on paper.

Guarantee you this. Let Glenvar play Graham's schedule against offenses like Union, Bluefield-WV, Princeton,-WV Lebanon, Va High, and Richlands. If this were the case, Glenvar would be giving up far more than 5.1 per game.
