There were obviously problems with the Orgeron era. The things he did right though were his work ethic and his recruiting effort.
If you're going to have success at a school like ours that has limitations, you have to out-work the competition on the recruiting trail, and then you have to be innovative with your system as well.
Orgeron failed on that latter part, and he also failed on his ability to motivate and prepare a team. He wanted to run the USC system when he got to Ole Miss, and that wasn't going to work here. He had started to come around by his last year though, and by all accounts, Freeze was set to be our OC in 2008 had Orgeron kept his job. That would've worked pretty well. Orgeron still had lost the team emotionally though.
Point being, there is a lot that was done right during Orgeron's 3 year period. If Freeze can follow what he did right but actually run a system that's a better fit and have the team disciplined and all on the same page, he will work out well.
It's really a simple formula. Recruiting (not stars but recruiting good athletes), system, discipline, and motivation. Orgeron failed on system and motivation. Discipline was a little bit of a problem for Orgeron, but it was more of a problem when he lost the team on the motivation front. Nutt failed on recruiting (attrition) and discipline, with maybe a little bit system as well. Mullen has motivation down. He has system. He has discipline. The only question with him is recruiting, and whether he can bring in enough talent. That's still TBD. Croom failed on recruiting and system primarily.
Go back and look at any failed coaches, and you can point to one of those areas. Jackie eventually lost it on discipline and motivation, because he lost his team.
