They did a very poor job of setting the stage. There could have been far more background on the state of College Football at that time, how the Big 10 and Pac 10 were not members of the Bowl Alliance, and just how difficult it was to get a 1 vs. 2 matchup. Then they could have highlighted Alabama's season a little more to show how they slowly worked their way up the polls to get to #2, and then thanks to Roy Kramer's little Championship idea they were putting it all on the line. I also would have liked to see more detail on UF's season, and its early losses to UT and MSU that made a Championship game appearance unlikely.
I was at that first championship game. Just so happened a good friend of mine got married in B'ham on the night before the game, so I bought tickets to "see history". I was sitting in the upper deck that no longer exists, and I totally froze my *** off. We were unprepared for the cold front that came through.
Anyway, one interesting part of the game they left out was Alabama's 48 yard extra point attempt. When Alabama scored to go up 20-7, one of the linemen was called for face-masking on the first attempt, for a 15 yard penalty. They were called for holding on the second attempt for another penalty. They were then facing a pretty long field goal for just one point, and did not have the greatest kicker in the world. Of course they made it. At the time it was just kind of funny, because we figured there was no way that Florida would score two TDs against that defense, but it obviously wound up being a pretty important extra point.
