I mean they lost their coach, their best player (Tyreke Evans), and will probably lose what would have been one of the best recruiting classes in NCAA hisotry. That hurts. Maybe they can get Terrico White to transfer to sooth the pain.

amongst their fans, you would know that is the most ridiculous statement ever. I hope they hire the worst possible coach, watch the program crumble before my eyes, and laugh as you'll be able to fire a missle through FedExForum without hitting anyone.

they've had their run and they will probably still be alright with the money they have to give to a basketball coach. Not to mention they will still be able to recruit being in Memphis and with the arena they have. They probably won't be a national championship contender anymore, but they will definately be a Tournament team year in and year out.

Forget I asked. Last time I lived in Memphis (mid 90's) they sucked and I never heard much from their fans so I guess I did not develop the hatred.

Just what are some of the Memphis fans around you doing or saying. This has to be worse than a loved one dying for them and they have to be spewing some rediculous stuff. I'd love to know as I too am enjoying this.

They've had national championship contending teams in 3 of the last 4 decades and I believe they made it to the Elite 8 in the one I'm not counting with Penny Hardaway so it may be 4 of the last 4.

Memphis might wonder in the wilderness occasionally, but they wll always show up in the hunt just as often.

They like having a good program, and are willing to pay for it. With that attitude, don't think they will tank out.
Nope don't feel sorry for them.

I thought this was an interesting and candid answer:

<font size="2">"I had it in my mind what I wanted to do and I was wrong. It just didn't work out the way I wanted it to and there was no real reason. Everybody is trying to read more into it than there was but it just wasn't (right). It's like in recruiting where I'm sure coaches go down their list they rank their players one through whatever, rank them one, two, three, four, five, six and when you get through five guys you probably don't go to nine, 10 and 11. That was sort of the case (last time). I put things in order and I got to three and stopped."</font>

I heard both of these today, and I have not changed one word of either. I swear I haven't.

"He has no idea what he's getting into, Kentucky does not have the following that Memphis has"
"How can't do this. He owns a house here in Memphis!"

But probably the biggest thing that I hear is he will be fired in 2 years if he doesn't win it all. These people have no idea what was going on at Kentucky...

I feel bad for Memphis, partly because I live here and partly because I have degrees from MSU and Memphis.

Memphis Tigers basketball was good for the city and Cal just nuked the program. They have no coach, no recruiting, and one expensive *** stadium to pay for. I have always had a hard time understanding why so many on here hate Memphis basketball. I assumed it was because of the comments Cal made about not needing to play SEC teams and for they most part he was right. Games with MSU and UM would have benefitted them 0% compared to the teams he was lining up. When the Tigers were good, it gave the people of the city something to rally around.

Everyone says the Memphis fans are arrogent, but C-A-T-S Cats Cats Cats fans are much worse to me. I personally hope this goes down as one of the all time coaching blunders. I know folks say a strong Kentucky is good for the SEC, but I have never liked Kentucky and I hope Cal struggles mightly in the SEC. Part of that is due to the Saban complex. I am getting real tired of schools going out and throwing outrageous amounts of cash at coaches. This will effect MSU in the long run because I can promise you we do not have $2.5 million to pay a basketball coach.

of crap.

I get so sick of hearing "it was good for the city" and "the city rallied around the Tigers". Give me a break. Watch the news any? The people "rallying" around the Tigers were all the white people that went to the games. Meanwhile, while they are at the games, their houses are being broken into in East Memphis, people are being shot for no reason, thugs are running half the streets and all of City Hall. That "good for the city" garbage is hysterical. It's a freaking basketball team.

How did that blue kool-aid taste? UofM will be begging State, OM, and Arkansas to play them now, and I hope all 3 of us tell them to go F themselves.

I lived in Memphis for a number of years. I hold a degree from Memphis. I can not stand Memphis basketball because;

1. Half of their basketball "fans" are UT football "fans" and "fans" of other SEC schools. This is a pet peevee of mine.

2. The media in that town has always treated State like a 3rd class citizen.

3. Game vs them in 2008. I was told I should be rooting for the Tigers because I lived in Memphis at one time and had in-laws there. I was told this by someone who went to school at State and was active with the Memphis Maroon Club but cheering for Memphis because she grew up in Memphis. Well, I 17'n grew up in Lowndes county, MS. I will not even get into their arrogance and behavior at Alltel.

4.. The tournament of 1996...all I heard was how they would beat the hell out us. If only we could have met.

There are just as many Ole Miss grads who claim Tiger basketball. It's disgusting. I grew as an Ole Miss fan in an Ole Miss family. But, I denounced the school the second I stepped into Davis Wade as a student. It's not hard.

And if you ever want to shut up the Memphis fan that gives you crap for not pulling for them even though you are a resident, just asked them when they last attended a Rhodes or Christian Brothers basketball game.

...absolutely no question that a successful Memphis basketball program is good for the city. It's not even a debatable issue. You may as well be arguing that the sky is green or Coach34 is a gambling god.

I didn't think Calipari would leave because of what he built and had coming, but he chose to go to KY, and they will be a better program because of it. It will set Memphis back a couple of years, but they will be fine, too.

I mean really. I can't believe you buy into that. They have been an elite basketball program for 4 years straight, and the city gets progressively more divided, crime-ridden, and corrupt. So what exactly is it doing to help the city? Money? Most of that gets pumped into the University. Besides that, there are dozens of conventions that come into the city that bring a crapload more money into the economy than the Tigers do. So what is it? Racial harmony? The street gangs putting down their AK's and holding pep rallies for the Tigers instead? Petty thieves deciding to watch the game instead of break into homes? The city council being so moved by the Tigers' success that they actually work for the city's best interests instead of their own? Enlighten me as to how it helps the city besides money - and honestly, even that is a paltry sum compared to what real tourism brings in.

It's media drivel, that's all it is.

Yep, my father in-law said before the '98 SECCG I should be a UT fan since I lived in TN. I said by that logic he should be a Memphis football fan. I have not heard that BS since.

You can't deny that having a very competitive college basketball team isn't good for a community - specifically the $$$ side. It's definitely not hurting anything.

But, to Costanza's point, the whole unity thing is over hyped here. The media loves to toss around how the Tigers bring the city together no matter what race, religion, background, etc. They usually do that by interviewing some white soccer mom prancing around in her Tahoe in Arlington/Collierville/etc. talking about how great it is that all Memphians are pulling for the same cause or some sappy crap like that. When in reality all she's doing is giving herself a pat on the back for liking something that she thinks black people like too. All the while conveniently forgetting why it is she probably moved out there in the first place.

...because every time they play on national TV they have "Memphis" across their chest. It's free advertising for the city. It's good for the city because this place is full of poverty-level folks, some who aren't worth a damn, but some who have just been handed a tough deal, and rooting for the team is a two hour break from reality. It's good for inner city kids who can find a common bond in something instead of finding reasons to cut each other on the playground. It's been tremendously good for the students of the school and it's helped build some civic pride in the local high schools. And yes, the media overplays the effect on racial tension, but it definitely helps there, too. It's never going to go away, but I guarandamntee you it's better than it was when Tic Price was here. And if for no other reason, you mentioned that the news is still nothing but rapes, burglaries, and murders, but you left off the five minutes where they talk about how great the Tigers are doing. Now that's going away, so there will be nothing to get excited about for these folks around here.

I went in a restaurant here yesterday and there were a bunch of black folks and white folks sitting around a big table talking about the Calipari mess. Now, any other day, any other set of circumstances, and those folks aren't spending any time with each other. On this day, they had a common bond, and they were getting along, discussing this story and eating at the same table. As Coach Croom said, if you can't see it, you're blind.

It's easy to look at this with an already jaded view and sit in judgement which you are doing. Like I said, you're essentially saying the sky is green right now if you continue to argue this point...that's how ridiculous it is.

I've lived here in Memphis now for 9 years, and I can safely say It made my week to see the Calipari Drama unravel! I can only hear so many T-I-G-E-R-S, TIGERS, before I want to vomit. They think because they win 30 games a year in the weak @SS C-USA that they are world beaters. It's just a Joke.

I know all of the other C-USA teams are licking their chops, and anxious to pay Tiger High back next year. I'm sure those 40 point beat downs they have been issueing the last 2 years, will bite them in the @SS next season.

have an inferiority complex towards the SEC that cannot be matched. I've lived outside of this ******** my entire life aside from my time at MSU. It sucked coming back home to put up with this again. I love that Cal left the program, because he was their program.

Now these bandwagon bitches will disappear like a fart in the wind.

I'm sure it helps the city a little bit, but probably not enough to really make a difference. But every little bit helps. I'd probably say it helps in a comradery sort of way, but it's really not going to affect the crime problem that much.

Hell, Calamari's recruits did their fair share of bringing the city's crime rate up. His players looked like they were straight out of Parchman. I wonder if this will be the appearance of UK's players when he gets there.

When did Pillow get a Memphis satellite campus? East memphis and poplar avenue? Seriously? I sure do get nervous driving past Ruth's Chris Steakhouse or Fresh Market. That's a rough 'hood.

Seriously though, I get your point. Places like Binghampton, Urnnnge Mound, Frayser, etc. etc. are the places private school kids shouldn't be hanging out. But if East Memphis really does scare you, I'd just stay in Greenwood.
