Anyone else like meeting Nebraskans out of state?

I was at the liquor store today here in Arlington and saw an older gentleman sporting a ball cap with a big N. As he passed I had to give the obligatory "Go Huskers!" chant. He stops and we talk about where he's from. Never heard of Beaver Crossing. Looked it up a minute ago on Google Maps. He was quite knowledgeable about recruiting and we both fawned over the Parrella hire. He said that he had season tickets and went to most games. It may have lasted only 5 minutes, but it left a smile on my face all day.

I ran into 11 Nebraskan's out in Vegas during a 5 day business trip in December. The first one was a young lady on the shuttle in the airport. She was from some small town I had never heard of, but we had a good chat. Always love meeting out of state Huskers!

Sitting at the bar in the Lion's Den in Dillon, MT last week. Service was bad, but the place was busy too. The guy next to me orders two drinks for himself and I commented on his intelligence. Turns out he was from Dodge, NE and that we had dozens of common acquaintances. He had 3 days earlier driven by my old house near Colon and Lake Wannahoo. Made my night!

I roadtrip a lot every summer and make sure I represent my Husker colors. I run into people all over that comment about their memories of Nebraska. I ran into a guy in San Antonio who said he played college baseball and they played the Huskers back in the late 60's. He said several Husker football players were playing on the baseball team, and he mentioned some really good hitting Husker catcher. I think it was Adrian Fiala he was referring. It is always cool to talk about home thousands of miles from home.

Had a cancelled flight at DFW so needed to kill 5 hours. I went to Pappadeaux Seafood, which is one level below the Terminal A concourse. I ordered and was reading a Husker book. My server was a pretty college student and asked me about being a Nebraska fan. Her dad grew up in NE, but moved to Dallas. She was born and raised in Dallas. She knew all about NU football and the team that year (4 years ago). It was pretty cool she was a big Nebraska fan despite not growing up there. Every time she bought me water or my salad, etc. we talked Cornhuskers for about 5 minutes and her other tables were getting pi$$ed due to lack of service. Probably the only time I didn't mind having a flight canceled.

My son lives in Phoenix and married a beautiful girl from Phoenix and she still can't believe how Nebraska fans can find each other and congregate. She has become a big husker fan. She graduated from A.S.U. and she could care less about them.

I have moved all over the country since about 2008. Went to school in Lincoln and lived there for 14 years. I miss it and Nebraska big time. So, seeing other Nebraskans around the country is always fun. A few recent favorites off the top of my head:
- Was in South Beach over the winter and was walking up Ocean Drive with a Herbie shirt on, and two attractive women yelled, "go big red!" I was with my wife, and they were wearing bikinis.
- I have had a Huskers sticker on my car since I moved out of state, and still get the occasional gbr from other drivers and pedestrians in my travels.
- Was working on a project for New Glarus Brewing in, you guessed it, New Glarus. Decided to eat Culver's for lunch for some reason. Noticed Nebraska plates in parking lot when walking in. Cross paths with him when leaving, and strike up a conversation. Turns out we know a few of the same people, and he is a preacher who works with Ron Brown on occasion.
- Not really a chance encounter, but going to the Husker bar in Washington DC was amazing. Seeing all the young people there who are DC residents was awesome, but it reminded me Nebraska's brain-drain problem.
- Forgot this one: wife and I were looking at houses/going to open houses in Milwaukee a few years ago. At one of the houses there was only one other couple. The dude was wearing a herbie logo hat, and I joked that we should just move in together because we need to stick together and the house was nice. No homo.

Being from a relatively small town in Nebraska, I am always curious of the people who say they have either never heard of the town, or have no idea where it is. Is this just Lincoln and Omaha folk? A lot of my friends from college had the same problem. Good people, but there is a lot that exists outside of L&O.

I also enjoy meeting the Nebraska folk outside of Nebraska. My wife is from Oregon and and OSU alum, and she always comments how there are Huskers everywhere, and you never really see Beavers anywhere besides Oregon.

I have witnessed this as well. My anecdotal experience is this is generally L&O folks.

Husker Nation is everywhere. I see and meet Nebraskan’s / Nebraska fans all the time. When I wear my Husker shirts I almost always get a Go Big Red from someone but these two stories stand out.

My wife and I were on vacation in Jackson Hole Wyoming. While leaving a grocery store a couple sees my husker shirt. We get to talking about where they and we hail from. Turns out they are from Hastings and he works with my cousin.

Another time while my wife and I were on vacation in Sedona Arizona we were eating at a restaurant. While leaving a couple sees my husker shirt. We get to talking about where they and we hail from. Turns out they are also from Hastings and they know that very same cousin.

We visit Oklahoma almost every year for Thanksgiving. Years ago, my BIL surprised me and got tickets to Bedlam so we went down to Norman to watch the game. I, of course, wore my Husker sweatshirt.
We were to meet some of his friends at a bar at a certain time but we got there early so we had a few refreshments in a parking lot. A large party was near by and the guy in charge headed our way when he saw us. Figuring I was to get some razzing I was a bit surprised when he put out his hand and welcomed me. Then he pulled up his OU sweatshirt to reveal a Husker T-shirt underneath and said "Huskers are closer to my heart!" Turns out the guy was from some town out by GI. Had a great time that day.

Yes I've experienced that, especially when I got to UNL from Omaha kids. I grew up 25 miles north of Fremont and I'm not joking I was talking to two girls from Omaha downtown who didn't even know where Fremont was....

Yeah I pretty much got out of there as soon as I could because I couldn't deal with the stupid anymore. I could understand not knowing where my hometown was or even a place like North Platte, but Fremont? Like you live a half hour from it! Hahaha

My Lincoln friends I met at UNL, who grew up in Lincoln were a little more observant. But man I feel like a lot of Omaha people (not people who have moved there) are Omaha people, not Nebraskans IMO.

Along those lines, I have led multiple youth excursions to Glacier, Yellowstone and the Tetons. One morning we were sitting eating breakfast at a restaurant outside the West gate of Glacier and the kids were acting like total buffoons with their stocking caps and sunglasses on. I told them, you never know who's watching you so you better behave. Their response was, we're 1300 miles from home, who we gonna know here. A few minutes later a familiar looking guy got up to leave and he stopped at our table. Turns out he was from Crofton and his brother is a friend of mine that I played BBall with regularly and he also knew most of their parents...... The kids just sat there with stunned looks on their faces. Having grown up in small town NE I always run in to people it seems from my home town in the most unlikely places. 30 years after he left my church, I ran in to the pastor that confirmed me. We were standing in line at the roller coaster at the Mall of America and for some unknown reason I recognized him. He was retired in Oklahoma I think, but was in Minneapolis for a wedding. Too many of those kind of stories to share them all.

As a 7th grader, I qualified for the State Spelling Bee. I remember talking to a kid from Millard. He was bragging about the size of the building which housed his future High School: Millard North. He said, "I bet our high school is as big as your Malls."

I typically enjoy Dillon and the surrounding area for fishing and elk hunting...... But unfortunately this trip to Dillon was about business meetings. The Board of Regents for Higher Ed was in town and I had to participate on behalf of my fellow colleagues. Too many suits and ties in town for my liking! I did stop on the Jefferson near Waterloo on the way home, to check on a buddy's cabin, and got lucky enough to watch 3 moose for a while!

This phenomena happens every week for me. As a young adult here in DFW I met a young lady at a club from Minden. She was hot, blonde and into me. Go figure. We dated for a while. Later, I found out she hated Nebraska. Turned me off. I get that she wanted to get away from the small town. She probably never figured out why I just stopped calling her. You can't be from Nebraska and not like it. Indiana? For sure, but not Nebraska.

Ok, I was from Omaha and went UNL my freshman year. I did not grow up my entire childhood in Nebraska so forgive me for not knowing all the small towns throughout the state. As a kid I remember my parents taking me to Fremont and the lakes. We also went to Grand Island and saw the Stuhr Museum. I also remember Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in Minden. My father took me frequently to one of the reservoirs to fish. When I was a young man at UNL I got to know people from all parts of the state. Heck, even today I don't know all the small towns in Texas. I go on business to another city and suddenly I learn of all the small towns that feed business into the bigger ones. I would never have heard of them otherwise. If I was living in Nebraska I would be taking road trips throughout the state.

On my wife an I's honeymoon at Montego Bay. The Jamaican captain of the booze cruise ship was wearing a Nebraska hat. I was WTF! Turns out he loved Nebraska football because of a big group of people from Nebraska came down and tipped he very nicely. Ever Since he will always be a husker fan, and any time they are on the TV down there he cheers them on. I was in complete shock, and thought it was awesome!

My oldest has been in the Air Force for 14 years and he married a young lady from outside Fresno, CA. He has been stationed and on TDY all over the world and when not on duty wears his Husker gear proudly. He has told me stories of walking through airports in Europe/Asia and people shouting GBR. He and his wife took a cruise/trip to Australia when he was stationed in Japan and they ran into multiple people from Nebraska. His wife calls it a cult and is amazed that they run into Husker fans everywhere. She has sent me multiple pictures from locations they are visiting and there will be someone in Husker gear talking to my son. OMFG is all she ever says : )

He is currently stationed in Tucson and the wife and I went to visit Nov/2014 for his bday and we stopped at his local watering hole to watch the Husker game and had our Husker gear on. A gentleman approached us and said he was originally from SD and had coached HS football in Rapid City and used to come to Lincoln for coaches clinics put on by TO, every year. Couldn't stop gushing about TO and Nebraska in general.

the ships manifest.
On troop ships I would look for any one from Gage County and personally greet them as they disembarked.
I would say 5 or 6 I knew and 2 were classmates of mine (out of 8 in our class) 3 of us in Korea.

I moved down south and went on the road in the mid 90s . I was shocked to have people come up to me and start talking ball everywhere I went. Running into fans can be nice when you're so far away from home...brings you back for a few minutes and you remember how nice people are.
