That last Auburn pitcher taking the pine rosin from under his hat bill? I saw him doing it with his hand and figured it may be then they showed under his hat and you could plainly see it. I’m assuming that’s illegal in college right? Thank god they didn’t eject him.

Pitchers use pine tar and other substances. It’s part of the game. If you watch any MLB game you’ll
Notice pine tar on most pitchers hat.

Give me a nail file and some KY jelly and I could throw a hell of a slider.***

No, but I did notice ESPN had the score wrong when they ended the broadcast.

4-2 Auburn

At the beginning of the game the logos of both universities were on the screen and beside the Auburn record, it showed them from the ACC. It happens to everyone I guess. At least they did not put an elephant next to AU.

They don’t do anything about this yet the HP ump goes out in the first to warn Small about going to his mouth.

Alot of pitchers use it. As long as you’re not blatant, most hitters would rather a pitcher throwing 90+ mph have a better grip on the ball and be better able to control where it’s going.

When Pineda was ejected, he had a glob of pine tar on his neck. Red Sox manager said he knows people use it, but told the umps because it was blatant. David Ortiz said that he doesn’t care about it because every pitcher in MLB uses it.

My guess is we have guys using it as well.

Everyone knows you can't lick your balls on the mound. It is very frowned upon....especially on national TV.

Speaking of pine tar, it seems a lot of awbern players had more than usual on their bats. Is this not policed anymore?

Clay Buchholz was using sun tan lotion on the ball a couple of years ago and it was adding 6 inches of break to his pitches. He was absolutely filthy with it till he got caught by the Blue Jays.

It’s frowned upon for sure. Happens more than you think though.

Pine tar is not really frowned upon as long as it's not excessive. Batters don't really mind if it means less of a chance for a wild pitch. All pine tar really does is help pitchers get a grip on the ball. Clumps of pine tar on the ball will change how the ball travels, and that's what would be unacceptable.

What is really frowned upon is any substance that makes the ball more slick/slippery, or any damaging of the ball that can affect it aerodynamically.

This thread reminds me of the old-time pitchers, one of whom was Lou Burdett, great pitcher with the Braves in the late 50's, when they were winning world series. They used to say that you could always tell when Burdett was coing out to pitch because the Braves catcher, Del Crandall, would come out with a bib attached to his neck...

I once played ping pong against an auburn guy. 17n cheated at that. I was beating the hell out of him. Can hit a serve if you are still holding the ball, Joey.

The Braves were still in Milwaukee then weren't they? I remember Lou Burdett.

You’re talking about my favorite team from childhood: Burdette, Spahn, Buhl and Pizarro on the mound; Crandall behind the plate; Adcock, Logan, Mantilla and Matthews in the infield; and Bruton, Covington and Aaron in the outfield. My Dad and I took an overnight train from Memphis to Chicago and on to County Stadium in Milwaukee to see the Braves. My love for the Milwaukee Braves began as a rivalry with my Dad. He loved the Yankees, and the Braves and Yankees were opponents in the World Series while I was a kid in Natchez and later in Memphis.
