Anyone else think Cohen might be grooming Holder for a long relief role?

That's the only reason I can think as to why he logged so much work today, especially after he went 2.2 innings on Friday. You have to think both JC and Butch want a RH out of the pen that can log some innings if needed. Right now we have E. Mitchell and Woodruff who are struggling, Gentry/Cox/Fitts who are not quite ready for legit SEC lineups, and Bracewell who has previous arm issues that prevent him from being good for more than 3 to 6 outs. At the end of the day all we are left with is Holder, who could compliment R. Mitchell as a power option against RH heavy lineups.

The problem is that you also take him out of a role where he's been very effective in the 8th/9th innings. Bracewell could then be plugged into the closer role in that scenario, although his stuff is pretty similar to Holder (with less velocity) so who knows how that would turn out. It also raises the question as to why Brace wasn't used on Friday in a save situation if that is the direction we are going. Anyways, just food for thought on Cohen's decision making. I don't know what goes through that crazy bastard's head sometimes.

Nope just finally using him like he should, he's our mule. I woulda let Fitts or someone take the 9th today but hey if he's feeling good let him get some work.

Agreed. I think we'll start to see him earlier in ball games going forward, kind of like we used to use Caleb Reed. The question is can he transition from the 2 to 3 inning guy he is currently to a 4 to 5 inning guy in certain situations (like R. Mitchell). We'd certainly be better for it if he had that versatility.

Yes. I've never been a fan of babying closers like everyone does these days. I like the old Whitey Herzog rule. Use your closer for up to 7 outs.

If fitts, brown, cox, or girado dont step up we could have problems. They r killing ourdepth. But holder us our closer we just might use him for more than one inning.

My guess only reason he pitched the 9th was to get the save.

Kinda like graveman only pitched 9th to get complete game. I really hope we're not putting personal stats over making us a better team. 9th inning was wasted sat and sun as far as giving bullpen some work. We're gonna have to put some of those guys in tough situations soon . It would've been nice to get them a non pressure inning. We did sweep though so mission accomplished.

I agree.

The more I think about it, the more I wish Evan Mitchell had pitched the 8th or 9th today. Evan is goofy as 17, but he has nasty stuff and throws gas. He would be great for a 1 inning closer type. Yes, he has control issues, but maybe if he was only asked to come in and blow 3 guys away every night, he could do it.

We should be getting something outta that talented SOB.
