I am relatively new to bass fishing but have gotten addicted to it lately. The problem is that I suck at it. Where are some of the best places to go in North Mississippi?

It is not the easiest lakes to fish in the summer but if you know what you are doing it can be a lot of fun.

but that's mainly because I haven't had the time to try and find them either. Therightway is right, Pickwick can be a hell of a lot of fun. You have to learn the lake though. Most of my luck on Pickwick has come at night. On other lakes you can bet if you're fishing the shallows, you're not going to have much luck with how hot and how quick it's gotten hot this year. At least this has been the case with me. My favorite styles right now are Carolina Rigging and Jigging. My go to places to fish are Pickwick, Ross Barnett, Columbus Lake, Sardis, Waverly, and the Tenn-Tom. There is a place in North MS that was once public, now it has gone private. But it was my all time favorite, The Henson Slash. If you can get ahold of the guys and pay the dues, do it! Also, carry an extra boat paddle (snakes) but you will fill the livewell/ cooler up damn near every time!

14 lbs. 6 oz bass caught there in March. Small lake easy to fish. Lots of big bream. Trace State Park 10 miles west of Tupelo on Hwy 6. Put in at the back boat ramp.

Been to Davis Lake a couple of times and did not catch jack. Like I said, I suck at this. I had a guy tell me the other day that he usually does well with a Carolina rig when he goes to Davis but I have not had a chance to try it.

I probably have been fishing too much in the shallows but it just seems like I never catch anything at all when I go out to the deeper water. Any tips?

Bay Springs Lake has been good but not sure about the deep summer pattern. Grenada Lake had been good but itis feast or famine. I have been catching them on crankbaits. The white bass are starting to school there now and are a blast if bass fishing gets slow. I have fished Bluff Lake a couple times this year with little luck. The river has been decent this year but nothing spectacular. Pickwick has been hot. I think 25 lbs plus on a five fish limit has been the standard on a lot of tournaments up there this year. I was there last August and had a killer trip. in two and half days I caught over 80 all on top water. Nothing big but a lot of 2-4 lbs. One of our truck drivers told me Sardis and Enid are good right now but I do not have any personal info on these lakes. We can't bass fish right now, but we restocked Browning Creek this past fall with Tiger Bass and it should be killer in a year or two.

If you are in Starkville, come fish the Starkville Bass Club with us. We have a good laid back group and fish most of the lakes in northeast Mississippi; Aliceville, Gainesville, Columbus, Aberdeen, Grenada, Bay Springs, & Pickwick.

Where about in NE Mississippi are you? I hadnt fished Pickwick this year, but from all I have talked to, they say it has never been better, especially when they are pulling any water. You ever been to Tippah Lake, just north of Ripley? The former state record of just under 15 was caught there in the mid 80's, and stood until it was surpassed by that one right at 19 from Natchez Trace. Its not an easy lake to fish, but has some hawgs if you can find them. I was taking to a game warden up there last fall, showed me a pic where a guy had caught 9 bass w/o moving the boat, and they totaled 81 pounds. He kept the biggest, which was about 12, and threw the others back. Id have called BS had I not saw the pic. Said he caught them on a submerged stump bed. I caught one right at 8 up there around 2000, and have lost a couple at the boat that would have ventured into double digits. If you are just wanting some different places to try, there a couple pretty good lakes between Rienzi and Corinth. One is the old Rienzi watershed, and the other is called Hurricane Creek. Rienzi is a lake that you have to fish the ditches to do well, because its so old it just has little shoreline structure left. Hurricane Creek is only about 20 years old, and is about 600 acres, and coverd in trees and lilly pads. It has produced a ton of 10+ pounders for its age, but I dont think people have practiced catch and release as they should, as the quailty hasnt been as good the last couple years.

I pretty much am just a jig fisherman, and just started using them in the last 4-5 years. A booyah black/blue or black/chartruese is all i throw 90% of the time. My quality has gone up since I started using them. I aint big on crankbaits of any kind, but my buddy turned me onto a new one last year, and they will outfish non plastics lure I have saw. Red Eye Shad made by Strike King. Use the Sexy Shad color. Are excellent for just covering open water, throwing across ditches, grass beads. Quality wise I had my best year last year, catching 4 between 6-7, but couldnt break the 7 pound mark.

I live not too far from Trace State Park and go there quite a bit but only sporadically do well there, mostly around spawn time. Elvis Presley Lake is loaded with1/2 lb bass and I have not been able to get anything worth keeping from there. I hear all kinds of good things about Davis Lake but just have not done well there myself. I am sure it has more to do with me than the lake or the fish. Just haven't had the time to get to Pickwick but sounds like I am going to have to make time.

I am an avid fisherman as well and prefer fishing Pickwick over the other areas in North MS. Unfortunately, I have not had the luck of years past, at least since it has gotten so hot. How and at what depth are you guys fishing to pick up these bass?

We have been wearing them out on private lakes in Madison County lately. Two of us caught 26 in about 4 hours last Sat. morning (It was just after full moon which may have helped also). Of those 26 we released 7 or 8 in the 4-6 lbs range. This was on a young lake in Madison County (5 yrs or less old). My 10 yo caught a nice 6.5lb bass there also. I am having a hard time trying anything other than a Bandit 200 pearl/black/sparkle crankbait because all it does it catch fish. They will usually hit a watermelon brushog or lizard as well. Early morning they will hit a Rebel PopR pretty good also. Another lake in the area does well with the Bandit "Louisiana Shad" chartreuse or a spinner bait with some type of plastic tail.

For me, it has been a great year for bass starting in March! For those that have a chance you should go to any managed lake in Madison County (there are many) and you will guaranteed catch NICE fish.</p>
