i had never heard the pirate comment (very german... i know). that is some funny stuff near the end of the quote below

As if Texas Tech's 52-30 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday wasn't bad enough for Red Raiders fans, coach Mike Leach's postgame comment that his players were listening too much to their "fat little old girlfriends" telling them "how great you are" isn't letting that game go away.

After the loss in Lubbock to a three-touchdown underdog, Leach used the phrase in describing how his team did not focus on Texas A&M and was drummed by the Aggies.

The "fat little old girlfriends" comment got someone's attention. At his weekly news conference Monday, Leach was asked whether he would apologize.

"No, I'm not apologizing to any of them," Leach said. "Absolutely not ... as coaches we failed to make our coaching points and our points more compelling than their fat little girlfriends. Now, their fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one, their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is how great you are and how easy it's going to be."

Leach didn't stop there.

"As coaches we have to solve our failure on reaching them, and the players have to listen. I am willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to make that happen. I don't know if I will be successful this week or not, but I am going to try, and there will be some people inconvenienced, and it happens to be their fat little girlfriends."

In talking to the media after the game, Leach also blamed the Tech coaching staff for the loss to Big 12 rival Texas A&M.

"The biggest thing is we didn't coach well enough to beat A&M, and we didn't play well enough to beat A&M," he said.

Leach has a well-documented history of off-the-wall comments.

When the Cleveland Browns expressed concern about drafting record-breaking Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, saying the all-American had a "diva attitude," Leach took this shot at Browns coach Eric Mangini: "Crabtree as a receiver has been more successful than that guy has been as a coach. ... We'll see how those non-divas up there in Cleveland do this year."

When second-string A&M quarterback Stephen McGee was chosen in the 2009 draft and Red Raiders quarterback Graham Harrell was not, Leach said, "I'm happy for Stephen McGee. The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did."

And again with A&M, this time about the school's cadet corps: "How come they get to pretend they are soldiers? The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is bandannas. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work on pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."

Throw your players under the bus all you want to, but the fact remains they're YOUR <17>ing players. If they suck so bad, maybe you should have recruited some better players. Leach's 15 minutes of fame are about up, with 0 Big-12 south titles, 0 BCS bowl appearances, and no bowl wins bigger than the Tangerine.
