I thought Zion charged into the 1st defender on the final drive with his backside. Hence no bucket and no followup off the missed FT. OTOH they had to makeup for the screw up on what should have been a shot clock violation.

Even if they had called a blocking foul, there would have only been 1 and 1 and no Tacko fouling out. Hence a good chance he’s able to block out on missed FT...

Gotta pull for ACC schools so I dont have to hear the blue idiots talk about SEC vs ACC on top of everything else. Sucks, but is what it is. Hope Duke, FSU, UVA, and UNC are in final 4.

Actually, there IS a way that the ball could graze the rim and the rotation of the ball not change … and that would be if the force from the impact of the ball hitting the rim was in a direction that was roughly the same as that which the ball was already rotating....

The change in rotation that I saw was in the same direction as the ball was already rotating. It just made the ball rotate in that direction slightly more quickly.

There's also a magnitude of force to consider … but we've already established that the contact with the rim was either non-existent (zero magnitude) or very slight - so the speed up of the ball's rotation was also very slight, and was made to look even more slight due to the super slow motion of the instant replays.

Always knew that my Speed School education would come in handy....

In that situation, the rim would impart a FORWARD spin on the ball while no one shoots the ball with that type of rotation--it's somewhere between backspin and a "knuckleball" or no rotation. So contact is always going to alter the rotation of the ball.

Not to mention, for there to be no change, the axis of rotation would have to be exactly parallel to the tangent at the contact point (between ball and rim).

The improbability of those occurrences is why referees use change in ball rotation to prove there was contact...
