Sorry if it was first written in Berlin Press.....

Article talking about how Saban and bama kicked 12 players off the team....or, released them.....one of them being the kid from Lumberton.....they would get told they failed a physical and told them they could stay in school on a Medical Scholarship, and then that would free up scholarships for the team....some of the players were interviewed.....said how they only had 12 scholarships to give this year, so they kicked off the other 12 so they could sign 24....

really ****** of bama and saban........I can't wait till he is the next coach for Dallas....

it allows an athlete to get a free education. if they feel they can still play, they should transfer.

I'm sure some players get outright "cut" but I do not believe it's just Alabama that does it.

and if you think the "Big D" is big enough for both Jones' and Saban's egos, I'd love.... scratch that... hate to see that.

I assume you're being sarcastic, at least when it comes to the medical redshirt issue. How could the use of one or 12 medical redshirts ever be categorized as "unethical" or "cheating"? Please explain. Oh, and when is Maudrecus Humphrey arriving at MSU? They could use him right about now.

A little off topic, but former Razorback and Dolphin Tony Bua was on the radio the other day giving some insight into playing for Saban. He said he is an a-hole. While with the Dolphins, Saban sent a memo to everyone in the front office that nobody should speak to him unless he speaks to them first.

I can appreciate his sentiment there. When I get to the office, leave me the eff alone. Take your "Good morning Mr. X" and shove them up your ***. Maybe I should've gone into coaching.

when you get past the cheating its a really awful thing to do to a kid. Its essentially telling him, "you can leave your friends/girlfriend, teammates, lose getting your degree from the university you committed to, go to a smaller school or lose a year of eligibility, but continue to play football... or you can stay, but you have to quit the team and give up football. Why? Because you haven't turned out to be quite as good as we hoped and I am going to replace you with another kid who might be better than you. And if he's not - I'll do the same to him."</p>

looks like they are the only team taking advantage with this.
12 for Bama, 13 for the rest of the league.
The bastard is using it for his removal of players that he does not think will benefit him. Thus he potentially opens up new scholarships.
Yes, those dismissed are compensated.

Never would've guessed you would post in yet ANOTHER thread to defend Bama. Thanks for all you bring to the board.

When we were at UAT a couple of summers ago for a 7 on 7, a ref from our home town but who had lived in Tuscaloosa for years told us that "it was made known" that you may not speak to Saban unless spoken to by him first. I chuckled and at first dismissed the comment as some sort of urban legend thing. But as the day progressed, I watched Saban scurry around the fields with a young female assistant in tow and it was strange - noticeable - how no one approached him.

Whatever.

He wins ball games. That's what he's paid to do.

He's been using medical hardships to cut people.

I wish we were in position to do what he's doing, trimming the fat each off-season with 'failed physicals', but I still am amazed he's been able to skirt by without anyone calling him out for it.

This is way worse for the student athlete than oversigning, yet that was such an embarassment to Slive. This apparently doesn't bother him a bit.

because it's all about winning football games. I wouldn't, however, pretend that it was anything other than use of a loophole to cut players without taking an APR hit. Just embrace it for what it is and be glad that you can brag that your program is in good enough shape to be making cuts every fall.

A guy like Kermit Tyler that we signed and was later diagnosed with a freak disease that makes it a potential risk to his life if he continues to play football is the type of situation that the medical hardship scholarships are meant to be used for.

It's not supposed to be used for guys who just aren't high on the depth chart 2-3 years in and happen to twist an ankle, but that's what Saban does.

Saban is a big 17ing prick, but he wins. That's his job. Arkansas fans don't seem to get this yet, but it's all about winning. No one cares if your coach is a dick. Nice guys finish last.

Ethics are not directly tied to the governing laws. Just because there is no punishment for your actions, does not mean those actions are ethical.

But, without more information on the individuals involved it is hard to pass judgment.

First, the fact that Saban has issued as many of these medical hardship scholarships as the rest of the conference combined makes you wonder if the medical hardships are truly warranted. What is going on at Alabama to cause so many career ending injuries???

Second, you have the fact that Alabama has really gone overboard with their oversigning. They had to "cut" over 10 players between Spring Training and the start of the season. How many of those players mysteriously developed career ending injuries and qualified for a medical hardship scholarship? Obviously, one player now claims he was pressured into it against his wishes.

If these guys are pressured into accepting the scholarships, then its unethical. If their injuries are dubious, then its flat out cheating.

But, as the Bama faithful have pointed out, the paperwork appears to all be in order and these players certainly had other options if they really did not want to end their playing careers. This, combined with the excessive oversigning, is a loophole the NCAA and SEC should be looking into. In the meantime, its pretty shady, but it appears to be legal.
