Anyone wanna take a guess at Chris White's 40 time?

The scouts aren't as concerned with 40 times as the fans and media make them out to be. A football player rarely runs the 40 in a game. What they really checkis the 10 and 20 yard split times and I have never seen those posted anywhere. Sure a 4.24 does translate into a special player but good 10 & 20 split times without a top gear and average 40 time stillcan get you some looks.

I remember the year Terrell Suggs came out of Arizona State. He had just obliterated the sack record that season and was touted as a 4.5-4.6 guy in the 40 as a DE. He bulked up considerably for the combine and ended up running close to a 5.0 forty. Many teams were scared off by that, but the Ravens went ahead and took him in the first round. I remember Brian Billick being asked about Suggs' forty time in a interview after they drafted him, and his reply was that they'd start worrying about his forty time when quarterbacks started taking 40 yard drops in the pocket. Looks like Billick knew what he was talking about.

Run 10 yards. Stop for 20-30 seconds. Run 10 more yards. Stop for 20-30 seconds...<div>
</div><div>It would be closer to what happens in a game, especially for linemen. If your *** is wore out by the end you're not going to make it very long in the league.</div>

so my theory has always been that with the technology available, why can't you just measure the last 20 yards, or give everyone a 20 yard head start and measure a top speed 40 yard dash.

That would be more relevant to football speed. They already measure agility in other ways, and no football player ever starts from stand still in a sprinter's position and takes off for top speed.

Even WRs, don't get to top speed from a stand still. Even on deep routes, they have double moves and things of that nature before they hit top speed.

For any player, the top speed is only going to matter in the open field, and you don't get to the open field immediately.

A true top speed measure would be better, combined with the agility measures.
