These things will never go away

But how meaningful or meaningless is a preseason poll? It is a silly popularity contest. When is the first poll that actually carries weight for the new playoff system? Is at at week 4?

It's easier to stay in the Top 25 than it is to break into it. The teams in the Top 25 get considerably more national coverage. So, I would say that the silly popularity contest casts a significant influence over the college football landscape.

You do know that there's a playoff committee, right?

We're right where I hoped we'd be: Under everyone's radar until the season starts. MSU has never handled pre-season accolades well. We always play better with a chip on our shoulder.

Our five game stretch starting Sept 20 begins with three top 25 ranked teams. If we win our first three games and then lose to LSU on Sept 20, we most likely won't be picked to win against Auburn and TAMU.

Need Mullen to win one that Vegas picks us to lose more now than ever. Start with LSU and our fan base will lose all sense of rationality.

We've seen plenty of teams start out of top 25 to finish top 5. If we take care of business with the opponents we got, we can be in playoffs this year.

i am shocked notre dame wasnt in this. SHOCKED....and i dont care how many players they have lost.

that said, its not where you start in the polls, its where you finish. we will be pushing for 10 wins with our schedule and the post-season. time will tell. we hardly ever get our due accolades. state has to squeeze any ounce of respect due to our history. if we keep winning, that will change. one thing is for sure, in the sec, you have to command respect and nothing is given freely. if we win, everything else will take care of itself.

You're mad about preseason polls? Hell I can remember back in the mid 90s Notre Dame was like 1-3 and still ranked. It's always been a popularity contest. The only reason we get any love is because we play in the toughest conference.

All last season it was discussed how this would be our year as the schedule and talent would align to give us our best chance at high success.

I just counted 8 SEC teams in the T25. 1/3 of the rankings are in our conference, with 5 being in our division. Everyone we play in the West, save Arkansas, is ranked.

The biggest thing polls do is determine which games go on the ticker as "Top 25" games, and also you get a bit more coverage on ESPN when you're Top 25. Your game usually gets highlights each week on each of the shows.

That's the benefit. With the selection committee thing in place, I don't think polls will mean AS much, but I still think they'll have an influence over what you see the committee do, so they aren't completely meaningless.

ND is at 17 btw.

you know it's not really football season till Lou Holtz predicts ND and SCar to be in the national championship race. When I hear that...I'm then fully ready for kickoff.

I don't think it matters for the playoff committee. If we are in the discussion for the playoff coming out of the SEC, we will have won enough to shoot up the polls. There is some benefit as far as exposure for being in the top 25, and being outside of the top 25 means we probably won't get any of that exposure until we play LSU, but being in the SEC helps mitigate a lot of that.

It's past time for a signature win over a Top 20 team...
