on his health. Hope that he is ok.

Update - it's related to knee surgery.

Honestly the way things are shaping up it would be a tough spot for Archie and I

don't think he wants or needs that spotlight. Hope he has a great recovery.

I agree. If Ole Miss ends up with one loss - he's in a tough situation if he is on the committee.

Hate that

on his health. Hope that he is ok.

I really was glad he was on that committee and was hoping he would help put 2 SEC teams in the playoff.. Manning family is solid. In thoughts and prayers.

That is a really surprising development. I can't blame him for stepping out of it though.

This leads to the question that will for sure be asked every year going forward: how much bias has been built into the committee even though diverse backgrounds have been included?

Agree ...

I agree. If Ole Miss ends up with one loss - he's in a tough situation if he is on the committee.

Even though he can't vote for Ole Miss, it puts him in a 'tough situation' with MSU, Auburn, Bama and OM all at or near the top.

Just spit balling here... But I've heard his name mentioned as a potential SEC commissioner... Is this a way of positioning himself for that move?

/or was that "mention" only in jest?

I don't know why it would be. Being on the committee would add to his resume for Commissioner, nor subtract, so no....

He can't win either way if he wants a 2nd one loss SEC team in the final 4.

It has to be health. He would have known this could have happened when he was asked to take the position, unless he is positioning himself to be the SEC boss which I highly doubt.

He would have had to recuse himself whenever they discussed Mississippi. This is not good news for the SEC as a whole. We need all the representation we can get on the committee and now we're one short. I'm not really buying the knee surgery as being the real reason he's stepping down.

I'd want no part of being on that committee. None.

After Edit... Glad he's ok. And I smell a future guest picker at Gameday on Nov. 29.

Why are not buying it? I really don't think Archie would step down for any other reason.

??? DId I miss sarcastericks? You think he ever thought he would be in the position of voting on either Mississippi team, much less be in a position where they woudl potentially have competing claims? I'm guessing it really is health but I'd also guess that he's also pretty happy to not be put in a position where Mississippi college football fans are sending him death threats again. Hell, it's conceivable he'd end up with death threats from fans of Ole Miss and MSU this time (as much as I'd like to hope that would be something liek race riots that UM gets to claim for their own, I'm afraid of what some deranged state fan would do to make us look bad in that situation, although I don't think there would be threats from either side that people intended to act on).

Just not sure how knee surgery disables you from doing office work, which is really what this is. I guess he just looked as his rehab schedule and the travel that would be involved with serving on the committee and said 17 it.

I think he is leaving for health reasons I just put the other out there. I heard he was having back and knee surgery.

Obviously he lost a bet to the most optimistic person in the world.

Archie: "So let me get this straight, Ole Miss will be a solid top-5 team..and Peyton will break Favre's TD record in the same week? What's next in this fantasy land, who's the #1 ranked team in the country? State? Ohio?...Florida?, no. Mississippi State. Really. Okay. If all this happens the way you say it will...Hell, I'll resign from the college playoff committee."

Can't imagine Archie being interested in being

Sec commish. He doesn't need the money or the agravation. At his age he's got a great life and being sec commish is real work.
