I do not remember who made the hit against Memphis but is was way worse than what Whitley did against Auburn. I want to say that someone mentioned on tv that he launched himself. I thought that the Whitley hit was very clean. It is not like it was an overthrown ball. He caught the damn thing. I really wish that they people that make up these rules could play at the speed these guys are playing at. You are damned if you do damned if you don't. When you have two guys at the same height it is very easy to have this type of contact. If you attempt to lower your shoulder, you also have to lower your head. If the target moves in that split second you could get called for spearing or putting yourself in danger.

I hate the call. It basically gets called whenever someone lays a big hit these days.

I understand the need to try to protect players since players are so big and fast these days, but it's nearly impossible to protect players and allow the game to still be played the way it is supposed to be played.

Ronnie Lott would've been bankrupt under fines if he had to play under these rules. Also, what people don't talk about is the fact that a player like Lott gave the 49ers an advantage in that the 49ers knew receivers didn't want to go over the middle. Their corners could cheat to the sidelines, giving them a distinct advantage because of his talent. Now you take that away from certain players and players like him today don't have the same value they used to have.

The same can be said with the kickoff rule in the NFL. Devin Hester lost value overnight. I'm getting off topic, but my point is I don't like the direction we're going with the rules in college and the NFL. At the same time, I see where the need is coming from. I just don't know how you address it.

Also the weak 'late hit out of bounds' call that was very dubious. They both extended drives for Auburn. Penalties, bad field position, and bad kickoff coverage cost us that game more than anything.

but that call was terrible. From one angle, you could see him leading with his shoulder pad into the guy. It's damn near impossible to go after a guy without leading with your head when one's head is sticking out further than a shoulder can. It's was typical calling by the great SEC refs that day though. Another day in the SEC...

then after he realized it wasn't late, he opted for the helmet-to-helmet so he wouldn't have to pick up the flag.<div>
</div><div>The NFL is even worse about calling this nowadays.</div>

They show a slow-mo replay after it happens. He led with his helmet and he was off the ground. He laid the MF'n wood, but it was the right call, as much as I hate to say it.

He left his feet to make the hit while the WR was still in the air. He aimed directly at the WR's chest. The WR comes down but Whitley was already beyond committed. It was a bad call. Obviously, they are trying to make an emphasis of this though. Just hope they choose to enforce some rules like this down the road that benefit us as much as they benefitted AU on Saturday</p>

Bama guy makes a helmet to helmet tackle and hits the Penn State guy so hard that it knocked his helmet halfway across the field and knocks the guy out temporarily. Penn State sideline goes crazy....only question the refs have is where to spot the ball .
