Are we starting to get a few officiating breaks now?

Did anybody else notice in the game Saturday on that last drive when Ballard (I think) ran the ball out of bounds with a little over two minutes to go and the clock kept right on running? I kept expecting the ref to stop play and reset the game clock but he never did. I was also surprised that UT never made a big deal out of it and the game announcers never mentioned it either. He never left his feet so there is no way you could even say he was down in the field of play and then went out of bounds. The first person that touched him was a UT bench warmer 5 yards away from the sideline.

The officials letting Ballard play was HUGE.

I really thought they were going to call us out for using an ineligible player, but Slive must have put in a good word for us.

That would be an impressive break by the refs if Ballard went out of bounce at any point in the game.

first off....
It was Perkins. Second, they have changed the rule about the clock stopping when a player runs out of bounds. I dont remember exaclty what the rule is now though. Something to do with forward progresss.

Same thing on the big throw/catch to Bumphis to get down to the 23 on the last drive. He clearly went out of bounds, they set the ball and then started the clock. How did I miss this rule change?

If I'm not mistaken, it has to be under 2 minutes

for the clock to stop after going out of bounds. The plays leading up to it were before the 2 minute mark which is why they kept the clock moving.

I do think officials are letting them "play" more this year. Not just MSU.

There were some obvious calls against tenn that weren't called (hold on preston smith) but I feel sure we probably got away with some too. My brother said same thing about their game (um fan). He thought both um and au got away with more than normal.

That's exactly it. It's 2 minutes left in a half. The clock always stops on an out of bounds, but starts up again when the ball is set.

It seems to me that over the years, the teams that are "better" get more breaks than the other ones. Human nature probably dictates that officiating crews tend to look for the poorer teams to make mistakes, penalties and such. Just the nature of the beast.

That is exactly the way its suppose to be outside of the last 2 minutes of a half, so if they stopped the clock long enough to set the ball it was correct. Now if the clock never stopped at all that wouldn't be, I wasn't really paying close enough attention to know if it ever stopped or not.

We may not be getting bent over and abused anymore, but we're still at least getting slighted just as often as we're catching any so called breaks. During UT's comeback in the 3rd, there was a big 3rd down play where Marcus Green caught a short pass and extended over the 1st down line. The official proceeded to mark it about a half yard short. The commentator immediately says that when a player steps out of bounds, it's not where he stepped out, it's where the ball is at the time that he steps out. Should have been a first down, and UT scored on the ensuing drive.

Nothing has changed! Just wait til we play 'Bama and LSU. We won't come close.

to getting a call in either of those games. Now if we somehow beat 'Bama and LSU loses another one before we play them, then we may get a call or 2 in that game. Because at that point, LSU will be out of the BCS picture and we will be undefeated and in the mix for a BCS berth. Other than that, no way! Oh, and God, I hope that happen!

Exactly, officiating has nothing to do with "protecting" anyone or any team...

superstars & "better" teams have always gonna the benefit of a close call. in every conference and every sport... good post.
