You've just been made head coach of a program with a strong tradition, but poor recent history. What are you running on offense/defense and why?

Whatever my personnel allows me to run initially. Watch plenty of film on any returners and find strengths and weaknesses. Don't put too much pressure on them and focus on my lower levels for a couple years. Take my lumps early on and build for the future.

Whatever offense I've ran before, or played in, that I'm most comfortable with.
Defensively depends on what offense is most commonly run in the conference we're in.

I like coaches that tweak their Offense and Defensive schemes to match their current players. That does not necessarily mean a total blow up of the O and D philosophies.... but it could.

Example if you have a ton of guys that have decent size 180-200 lbs and are pretty fast but have very few big powerful guys 225lbs plus.... and you normally run a 4-3 Defense- .......why not switch to a 3-4 or a 3-3-5 to better match your current junior and senior players/personnel? Or the reverse - you are blessed with a lot of lineman but don’t have a ton of speed - go with a 4-3 or 5-2 on D and do some jumbo packages on offense with a TE that is really just another Offensive Tackle!!
