Reportedly he was fired at UNLV for driving through a Wendy’s drive through buck naked.
Don’t know about that, but first time I went to Vegas I remember driving down the strip and the temp said 123. That garbage about “dry heat” is BS, so even if it were true I might give him a pass.

Probably no one would take the job and a analyst who left unlv in disgrace was a very cheap hire.

Question and debate the hire, sure

but please stop with the disgrace/Wendy’s rumor. It’s not true. He left because Dan is a dick and was telling him how to run his defense and he figured it wasn’t going to work, so he left.

I can’t wait for the HBO miniseries on the life of Arnett, especially for the scene in late 2026 when he and Mullen meet in the Starkville Wendy’s parking lot to stare each other down. Then they split a baconator and embrace

Everyone that has been around college football for the last 15 years clearly understand that Dan is a dick. That should not have been a grand revelation to Arnett after being hired.

Reading this entire thread is fascinating. So many takes. So few of those takes based on anything other than vibes and emotions.

And yes of course Lebby is on the hot seat and that impacts who we can hire .So all in all this might be the best hire possible under the circumstances.
This statement is really all that needs to be said. We all agree on this point.

So, the obvious question that must be asked….if the coach you decided to retain after 2 disastrous seasons has you in this spot where he can’t get legitimate help because he’s a dead man walking, then where was the real 17 up in this entire scenario?

Not arguing that but promises made in hiring aren’t followed through once hired. Telling Arnett to change schemes made him say, ya know, not for me

Lebby once again makes a poor DC hire. Why bring this guy back? It's comical. I mean you just cannot make this stuff up. Why can't MSU get out of its own way? It's a legitimate question.
I know that isn’t a home run, but I’m surprised by the negative reaction. Yes, he was basically arrogant in throwing away an offense built for an air raid scheme and hiring and an inexperienced offensive coordinator, but that was him not being ready to be a head coach.
He seems like a decent DC?

He seemed fine with that when he was head coach, at least on offense.
Yea. And he replaced the assistants, like Mullen did. Both were the HC in those situations and their decisions, wrong or right.

Again, debate the merits of the hire, fine, but the Wendy’s/disgrace line is false and wrong

I trust Leach’s judgement on Arnett. Before Arnett Leach had like a 3 hour call with Arnett talking about anything and everything. That was how Leach vetted his coordinators, and decided he was ok. He was a good DC back then and suspect he will do so again. No one should consider his HC tenure when trying to predict the future - apples and oranges.

Coach Arnett is a likeable guy, and I wish him nothing but the best. But, this hire just seems like one more moment where the fanbase is getting jerked around this football season.

Yards per play with Arnett:

2020: 47th (5.5)

2021: 66th (5.6)

2022: 37th (5.2)

Under Hutzler

2024: 113th (6.3)

2025: 103rd (5.9)
^This tells it all. When it all boils down is Arnett a better DC than Hutzler. Hell yes and it's not even close. We will be way better on D. Period.
May not, but he’s better than hiring Bama’s waterboy hoping he turns out ok.
Many have no idea how bad and how bad a hire Huntzler was. You don't hire a guy who has NEVER called or controlled his own defense to be a DC in the SEC. Maybe the worst hire in MSU history.

Right when we should be taking advantage of current situation of turnover and coaches at other school we continue to **** the bed. Just proves Lebby is on thin ice. His coaching circle is really small and nobody wants to work for him if this is true. That or Keenum keeps sticking that plastic nose where it doesn't belong.
Arnett was a decent DC but he wasn't amazing and his defensive recruiting left us screwed there.
Yeah. Lebbys assistant hires have been abysmal. Last DC had never even been a full Position coach before. This one couldn’t find a coaching job the last 2 years. His first game September will be his first game since we fired him.

To me the biggest mistake was keeping Hutzler another year. Cool you made a bad hire but deciding to keep him another should not have happened.

Much better than what we have now. Sign him up.
Thing that worries me is Putz attribute was as recruiter. And we need 2 DL’s to compete in Arnetts D complimenting Lebby’s low TOP O. Somebody got to get players. He better find some top flite recruiters or this won’t end well.

I am a little concerned that it was 62 and 40 with us running a ball control offense. We don’t exactly run one of those now.
True. We run the polar opposite. And when a few minutes of ball control would’ve beat Texas our coach refused. ZA will not have near the talent up front this time, and he didn’t do much to bring them in last time. This looks like a disaster waiting to happen. At least, it would get rid of Lebby. But I don’t expect we get that far anyway.
