TAMPA, Fla. - Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury can't really talk about his most persistent memory of his team's last game against LSU, a 97-94 double-overtime Tigers win Feb. 11 at Starkville, Miss.

"What I remember the most I probably can't say because you guys will get me in trouble," he said.

So we'll guess. It was probably a no-call on a close block/charge call at the end of regulation - LSU's Quintin Thornton bumped MSU's Jarvis Varnado just before Varnado launched a half-court heave at the buzzer that he missed. Stansbury exploded, drew a technical foul, and LSU actually wound up starting overtime with a one-point lead after the technical free throws.

And in a match between what were the two teams atop the SEC West standings, LSU prevailed en route to what would eventually become a 13-game SEC winning streak. Tasmin Mitchell had a career day with 41 points and simply wouldn't let the Tigers lose in overtime.

The LSU loss started a stretch where the Bulldogs lost five out of six games. That sent the Bulldogs from first place at the start of the LSU game to its eventual place as the third-place team in the SEC West.

Today, MSU (21-12) can avenge the loss that sent it spiraling out of the SEC championship race and move into the game for the SEC tournament championship. (much more at link ... 3 pages worth)
