As bad as we'll be next season- should we keep The Recruiter one more?

Do we bring in a new coach to get started on the rebuilding to fix the problems- or do we let The Recruiter have one last farewell tour- so that his supporters dont act fools next year when we struggle like Polk's did with Cohen? We aren't going to win next season regardless- what say ye?

Should have gotten started last year, but people wanted to wait on one more meltdown. Why have another one next year. Bring someone in who can keep control and keep things respectable.

Why would you ever hang onto a coach for one more season even if the next season projects to be a bad one. If he's not the answer, then it's better to bring the answer in sooner rather than later. I'm not necessarily saying that Stans shouldn't keep his job. If he gets us into the NCAA tournament, I think he's probably earned that.

I think if he makes the tournament, then absolutely, you bring him back. Not sure I'd like it, but you just don't want to set that precedence of firing a coach after he makes the tourney - other than in some extreme circumstance.

Also, if you fired him now and he made the tourney, how much of the fanbase would be behind this move? 50% maybe (speculating but I don't think it'd be significantly higher/lower than this figure)? Knowing that we'll probably be bad next year, that would be your window - we have a bad season and now it seems more reasonable to fire him even if we make the tourney this year.

For disclosure, I think the scenario changes if he misses the tourney. In that case, he should be fired now because I think a large majority of fans would be on board with that move and you're not setting that precedence. The next coach would certainly be given a "pass" for whatever next season turned into.

Don't worry about Pollard. This has gone on long enough. Get the new guy in here and let him get started.

Here's why I say that... Stans has been the overall king of apathy since he got here... his teams reflect that, especially in key games we need to win. I refer to a quote he made about Ole Miss before the season started:

"Our State? I don't worry about our state. I worry about Kentucky and I
worry about Florida. Those are the people I compete against. That's
the way that's been. So, hey, that's where it is. You know the records
on that."

I laughed this quote off when he made it, but it really makes total sense. Stans is so hell-bent on beating UK and Florida that he overlooks teams like Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia, Arkansas, and LSU... our record against these teams is 3-4 so far this year... I suspect we will be 4-4, maybe 3-5 when it's all said and done (that doesn't include South Carolina, too). These losses include losses @UM, @AU, @LSU, and at home against Georgia. So he is saying "We are going to worry about beating Florida, Vandy, and Kentucky that we forget the games we NEED to win, like Auburn and Georgia?? I can't take that attitude.

Obviously, I'd want to beat Kentucky, but those games are easy to get up for... it's the games like the ones previously mentioned that are killing our RPI right now... games we NEEDED and SHOULD HAVE won... If the team doesn't care to get up for the games we need to win, why should we? I don't see Calipari and Donovan saying **** like this... they take care of business before worrying about the big games... that's why they are successful and we are inconsistent. Stans even admitted he doesn't worry about those games in the quote above, yet those are the games that bite us in the *** year in and year out. That's cause for getting rid of him for me.

ETA: I forgot to mention that when we lose those games we should win, he says we were underdogs. This **** really pisses me off. He admits he doesn't worry about them, then when we lose them, he says we were underdogs.

He was simply saying that he expects to beat OM so he isn't worried about in-state championships. I think that quote was why they were so pumped in Oxford though. Defiinitely should have kept his mouth shut.

he competes against" while saying he isn't worried about "Our State." You may be right, but a coach that comes out and completely disregards an instate rival while claiming he is competing with Kentucky and Florida eats me up because Kentucky and Florida don't consistently lose to teams they should beat, especially at home (I know Florida lost to Tennessee, but I'll bet the farm they weren't overlooking them). We get up and play for the big games, but we can't get up for the games we NEED to... and this seems to answer the reason why... he isn't worried about Georgia, UM, LSU, and Auburn... he's worried about the big games... then we lose those games.

there's a lot that can still happen. If we miss the NCAAT or bow out in the first round then I would put out feelers for my top 3 candidates. If there is a legit candidate with sincere interest, then make the move. If not, keep Stans, let him sign Pollard, don't extend his contract and then re-evaluate after next season.

I stand by what I said, and I don't think "fan apathy" is enough to fire him if he makes the tournament. If he makes the tournament this year (barring some miraculous Sweet16 appearance), then it's smart to wait one more year for him to not make the tournament. Not just for the sake of hiring the next coach, but also so that more fans are on the same page with the move. If you keep him for next year (with the intention of firing him if he misses the tourney) there are two scenarios for next year:
1. He misses the tourney and gets fired or
2. He makes the tourney and keeps his job

So, either he gets fired anyways, and you save face for not firing someone who just got you to the tournament or "worst case" he saves his job next year by making back to back tournaments. As a fan, I don't think I could complain with either one of those scenarios if they played out that way.

....and is a fundamentally solid player, I fully expect him to try to transfer, barring a change in direction of the program.

And if you were serious, 7 years? Isn't that kind of scary? It could be almost 2020 before we know if we've done any better....

Forgive me for a moment, I know scout.com might not be the best choice, but here are our top 25 recruiting ranks under the "Recruiter" <div>
