I couldnt help but feel sorry for Dawggeezer, Maddawg, Hanmudawg, BriantheDawg and yes, even CowpowerMeoCowstanza....I know full well how you felt last night. It sux badly when a hero of yours, coaching the school you love, has reached the end. And its obvious we have reached the end. It makes you sad to see them fail, when in the past they have brought you such joy. And it also makes you sad because you now see what other people have been seeing- that it's time for a change.<div>
</div><div>I remember 2003, having to sit there game after game and watch my hero fail. Seeing Jackie's teams play like that after what he had done in the 1990's was just very hard to take. And you have that moment when you have to agree to change- to let go, because your hero simply isnt getting it done anymore. I'm sorry fellas, I know how you feel and I'm here for you.</div><div>
</div><div>It's time to get prepared Sixpack. We are not like the other SEC school in our state, and we arent going to do anything to bring ridicule or disdain to our great University. But we do need to start evaluating candidates this season as it plays out- and come up with a list of 5 guys we would like to see as our new coach next season. Irondawg got this started last year, and I think it's a good idea to start evaluating and investigating potential coaches.</div><div>
</div><div>I have full confidence in Strick- he even set a hardline expectation for this season- and last night showed that expectation is not going to be met. I'm sure he already has a list of names, much as Byrne did, for when that time came. I also feel like he is smart enough to contact agents to gauge interest, and not make the process so transparent as our little brother school in Oxford does. He will do a good job in making this hire- he will be prepared, and he will have some quality candidates to choose from. The evolution of the SEC, adding A&M and Missouri, makes this a much stronger basketball conference, and more attractive to other coaches. We pay well by D-1 basketball standards, and will reap the benefits of that.</div><div>
</div><div>I want us to contact Shaka Smart and Greg Marshall to guage interest- they may say no, they might say yes. But we need to see what their agents say to begin this process. Now let's get started and find a few more names to potentially lead our program starting in April, 2012.</div><div>

Been off the Stansbury wagon for about a year but Coach was too busy discovering how difficult it is to slap himself on the back and whack off over our mounting losses to notice. Suits me to fire him immediately after our upcoming losses to South Alabama and UT-Martin.</p>

I'll be the first to admit I don't follow basketball nearly as closely as I do other sports, but I see the mention of Shaka Smart a lot.

My question would be, would he have been on anyone's radar if his team lost in the first round last year, or would he have been on anyone's radar if his team had ended up in the NIT, which they nearly did?

If I'm looking at potential coaches, I think I'd want to see more from him than a 3 week run. It was a crazy run to say the least, an unbelievable one, but I'd be curious to know if it was just a flash in the pan with a group of players that found some chemistry and breaks at just the right time.

Admittedly, like I said, I don't keep up with enough basketball to know what other good candidates are available, but I'd be curious to see more from him before anointing him. Ultimately, it's really about finding the best cheater that can also coach X's and O's to guys that aren't used to playing half court offense and defense. I don't know who those people are, but that's the way you have to go.

The list of fired SEC coaches (and I'm sure other major conferences too) is filled with names that took a mid-major to a Sweet Sixteen but weren't worth a **** when they got to the SEC.

we come up with a list and then what? email it to Strick and he goes and hires one of the 5? the Pack has that power? great. will you attach a question for me? why the 17 do i have to pay 20.00 to park two 17n miles form the stadium? thanks buddy. im with you on stansbury btw.

...they're arguably the Tulsa basketball of the 2000s.

Remember Tulsa having Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, Steve Robinson, Bill Self, and Buzz Peterson being coaches at Tulsa? VCU had Capel and Anthony Grant as coaches before Smart was hired.

according to Wikipedia. Do we pay Stansbury that much? Seems like a lot for a BB coach, especially at a place like VCU. Seems I'd heard that Stans is paid about $900K.

but Rick has this season to get this thing righted after the very disappointing season last year. I think we will more than likely know where things are headed by the time SEC play starts. With games against TX A&M, St. John's or Arizona, West Virginia and Baylor all in the pre-season schedule its going to become pretty clear pretty quick the type of year we are in for. Actually, in my mind, this season was set up for failure in that we will have 3 rather high quality opponents in the first 5 games. Well the problem with that, as anyone who has watched Rick's teams for the last 14 years would know, is that it takes our team under Rick at least 6 to 7 games (sometimes more) to even begin to look like an actual prepared, half-way organized team. Given we lost the home game last night I will actually be very surprised if we don't start the season now at 2-3.

that he made more than Mullen did last year. That's incredible for a far secondary sport at MSU.

I'll have to use the search function to remember some of the guys I came up with as I threw away the list I had made after stans was retained.

But basically - watch some of the mid-majors and see who's style you like. Then you start digging into his background and personality. The lone reason Stans has been able to survice is his ability to recruit better players than most of the programs. It does us no good to get a better coach if they have no recruiting ability.

I know Marshall and Shaka are hot names, but I want to see more of them this year. I know Marshall offensive style would work well here.

I guess the only thing that troubles me is the inference that only a handful of fans (the apologists as you call them) were "sad" about the game last night. It's like since you have already decided it's time for a change you actually enjoyed watching us fail. As much as I despised Crxxm, I still hated watching us lose all those games. Just because I had already decided he was never going to get it done at State, I never started enjoying watching his demise.

And I will never enjoy watching Stans fail, no matter how many "I told you so's" are forthcoming.

Do I hate to see us lose? Hell yeah, but the last couple of years I have gotten to the point that I don't get that upset when we lose. I have just become numb to it. You almost expect games like last night

but I expect us to going into the game- so its never a surprise to me when it happens. Like when Polk got punched in the gut- if you are ready for it- you can tense up and soften the blow- but if you arent ready for it and expect something else- it hurts much, much more.<div>
</div><div>You have expected The Recruiter to get things turned around and to come thru- but many more of us have seen that it just isnt going to happen. Especially when he has a tougher OOC this season, and now a tougher SEC. The last few years, he had a weak SEC to bail him out- he doesnt have that this season. We're going to lose 12-13 games this season, and that wont get us into the NCAA Tourney</div>

but you're talking $5-6 million buyout and a $2 mill a year salary. That's a lot of cheese. Are you absolutely sure that's the mouse you want to eat the cheese? With that type of money I think bigger and better names might also be available.

...between Sherrill and Stans is that with Jackie, I could still look back at the best three year period of MSU football (in my lifetime at least) and be thankful. With Stans, I'm not sure there's anything I'll look back on with fondness. Possibly winning the SEC at Alabama, but even that memory is tarnished by an early tourney exit.<div>
