State fans have rarely seen better.

Whether they know it or not, Miss State fans have been witness to one of the school's best offensive performances in its history. While the fanbase has been split in it's support of QB Chris Relf (a significant portion of the fanbase has whined about needing to play back-up QB Tyler Russell), it appears they have been treated to a damn fine season on offense by Miss State standards.Were the crys of "we're too one-dimensional to beat good teams" and "we will miss Dixon" that permeated school message boards justified? Were drunken comments of "your boy Relf sux" spewed at tailgates really the case? Let's look at this season comparisions to all others in State football history:

Total Offense:

The Bulldog offense has set the school record in 2010 already with 4,732 yards this season. One has to like the Bulldogs chances at eclipsing 5,000 during the bowl game.

State averages 394 yards/game- 2nd best season in school history. 422 in 1982 is first.

The Bulldogs have set the school record with 242 first downs this seasons, surpassing 233 from 1982

Rushing:

The Bulldogs have amassed 2,589 yards this season. They are 164 yards short of the 5th best season in school history heading into the bowl game.

State has 23 rushing TD's- need 1 more to tie 5th best season- 3 more to get to 4th

Relf needs 58 net rushing yards to set the school record for QB's currently held by Don Smith, or 38 to overtake 2nd place holder John Bond

Vick Ballard has tied the school record for rushing TD's in a season with 16 and has the 2nd highest scoring total for a season- both of those held by State legend Jackie Parker

Passing:

The Bulldogs have had the 11th best season in school history in passing yardage. With just a mere 164 yards in the bowl game, 2010 will be the 7th best passing season in school history.

The Bulldogs have 15 TD passes- that is tied for the 3rd best season in school history. The Bulldogs need 1 for 2nd, and 2 to tie for best all-time.

With their 56.6 completion percentage, it is currently 4th best in school history for a season.

Scoring:

State currently has 325 points on the season. The school record is 349 set in 1994.

School record is 45 TD's scored- Bulldogs have 41 in 2010 to this point.



It may not have always been pretty in 2010, but by school standards set over 100 years of football- it's easily been one of our best. All State fans need to learn to enjoy the good times in football, because they just haven't been all that common. Should we remain satisfied because of what we accomplished in 2010? Of course not- the need is there to keep improving. Just make sure and acknowledge when our guys have a done a good job. And 2010 was a job well done

do we eliminate some of the top rushing stats because we ran the wishbone from 1980-84 and never passed?

A per game average would be a better indicator. But I agree it seems our offense was more lethal this year than in recent memory (recent is covering about 25 years).

It is still a fact that we have played many more 10 game seasons than any other.

Like the Jackie Parker record ( now tied). Just saying its not really apples to apples.

I'll will say I am proud of what we have done the last two years...fun to go to games...again.

We averaged 18 points a game in SEC games. That's good for 11th in the conference ahead of only Vandy. We were also 11th in the SEC in total offense for SEC games. Ahead of, again, Vandy.

And that's with our last games- against Arkansas and Ole Miss- averaged in. In those two games, Relf actually started to pass the ball efficiently- at least 65%- the last two games, and lo and behold we doubled our SEC average for points scored in those two games which at that time was around 15 points a game.

I haven't seen anyone ***** about Relf the past two weeks- and for good reason. He has started to play better, and I will give him and the coaches credit for that. Had he done that all year, no one would have been bitching. And let's be honest here- there was a reason that Ole Miss stacked up 8-9 guys in the box, and no it's not because Tyrone Nix is a dumbass- although he is a dumbass.

Your stats have games against Alcorn and Memphis- teams that Croom and Woody would have lit up like Christmas in Canton, and a horrible defensive team in Houston added in, as well as UAB. But I think your research brings up another point- although not the one you intended. How many years has MSU beaten the crap out of people that they SHOULD beat the crap out of? Not many. But that said, I EXPECT MSU to beat the crap out of those people. Just like I expect MSU to be better than 11th in the SEC in scoring and to be able to functionally run an offense without feeling like a completed pass is the equivalent of a completed Hail Mary. If we finish in the top half of the SEC, in scoring and total offense, I am happy for a point of reference.

There is a silver lining here to the SEC stats and our season stats, and that's the fact that without a doubt that our coaches have proven that they know how to run an offense. They have proven that they are not the issue, so that means that the issue is a matter of bringing in better players- and in our case, more specifically QB's and WR's. And I feel like the staff has done that- at the QB positon, we have as underclassmen or recruits Tyler, Favre, and now Dak Prescott coming in, which is certainly an upgrade from what Dan inherited, and then also with the WR postion, we have Chad Bumphis, an emerging Chris Smith, Micheal Carr, Robert Johnson, Jameon Lewis, Arceto Clark, and then recruits such as Nick Brassell, Joe Morrow, probably/hopefully Tobias Singleton, and Devin Fosselman.

So, from this point forward, I expect us to continually improve on offense and continue to get better.

Season stats are season stats- and they are what we have been for more than 100 years. Complaining about Alcorn and Memphis being part of that is ridiculous. It's just part of what we had to face this season.

We were 11th in points and yards ahead of only Vandy. Thats terrible.

In fact, I was quite pleased that we beat the crap out of them. It wasn't that long ago that there was a chance that we would get beat by a team like that. Ask Tulane and Maine. I was actually praising our team for that, not complaining about it.

What I AM/WAS complaining about was the offense prior to Arkansas in SEC games. I do agree that good offenses are able to run the clock out. However, that's not how you measure whether an offense is good or not. You measure that with points, lack of turnovers- something we finished sixth in the SEC in, and total offense. How is holding the ball and grinding on other teams any different that what Croom's offenses did the rare times that they had the lead? Surely you don't consider those good offenses? I know I don't. The bottom line is we had problems offensively during SEC play. Heck, even Dan Mullen joked about "the scoreboard blowing up" or something a few weeks ago because of how badly we had struggled. Even Dan was making fun of his own offense.

I mean, surely you don't believe before the Florida game that Dan told the offense- "All right, let's get 10, and then pack it in". I sure to God hope not anyway. If it was, you should be more pissed than any of us because you're about to have to pay 500 bucks or whatever because we were grinding it out all year.

What I want is better performances in SEC games from the offense. I want us to get 28 points a game in the SEC- which would be good for 4th in the SEC this year, and 6th place was 27, and to be in the top half of the SEC total offense. The way we performed against Arkansas and Ole Miss is perfectly acceptable for me. Surely you would agree with me on that since you thought 30 was a reasonable expectation for our team over the course of the season.
