Excuse me DS, but you might have noticed that Wes had stepped back in the box

when he hit the bomb, so Bruce is good. SPS does serve a higher purpose.

Looks like the ball was out over the <17> plate and it was a curve ball. If he moved away from the plate, all the balls would be out over the plate and he would hit it like that more than once in a <17>n' while

This guy has the ability to hit 20+ bombs a year. If he wants to go to the next level he is going to have to fix the inside of the plate. Pitchers will eat him alive in there. He is not a five tool player and the only thing that will get him to the show is can he hit a HR every 15-17 At Bats. He ain't going to do it standing where he does.

He is deifinitely off the plate a bit more. And he CRUSHED that ball,

Wonder if he read your post last night. Regardless, that's what can happen if he's not crowding the plate.

I bet there's some pro hitting coach salivating over turning him into a....

Power hitter. The Red Sox found about 5 m.p.h. on Jonathon Papelbon's fastball, and I'm sure some pro coach will have him in a batting cage for 3-5 hours a day.

Was wondering if you liked that swing from him better. I sure did. There's no reason in this world he shouldn't at least double his HR total next year.

Rea is already one of the most valuable players on our team, and not for his bat... Dude is a black hole at first base. How many times have we seen him stretch to catch the throw that most 1b guys would let sail into the dugout? Can't beat 6'5" at 1b.

This. His glove is underrated. Time after time, he manages to scoop up short hopped balls from Frazier.

In Bruce's defense, it looked like Rea was further back from the plate on that at bat than he has been standing, especially Saturday.

Rea absolutely CRUSHED the pitch. 17'n moonshot. LF barely even moved.

He definitely needs to work on his plate approach a little, but a summer at one of the elite summer leagues should help. He needs to be a 15-20 HR guy for us next year. Seriously though, you should call up Cohen and offer some volunteer help for Big Wes. Just a few minor tweaks would make a HUGE difference.

As far as I'm concerned, he's our 2nd or 3rd best player behind Hunter. He's unreal defensively at 1B. Moves well (not fast, but well) for a man his size. And he might be our best hitter with RISP. I know he's maybe the only guy I'm consistently happy to see coming to the plate in that situation, anyway.

No question that he is an outstanding defensive 1st baseman. I just think he's capable of giving us more production at the plate. Not complaining though. He's a hell of a player for us.

For those of us that are oblivious, especially me, who is Bruce, and why is he special? Serious question

Played 1st base for our 1979 CWS team. Hit what was then an NCAA record 29 home runs that year.

Totally agree. Wes needs some help to unleash that power at the plate.

He absolutely crushed that ball yesterday...

Fastball, 88 mph right down Broadway.

You are correct. It was a fastball right down the pipe. I don't know about his location in the box but rea's biggest problem is he is a guess hitter and he has trouble getting to a plus fastball. Now, that said, he is one of my favorite players and he is big part of our success this year. With a couple of adjustments to his approach he could step up huge next season.

I love that. Reminds me of my last highschool game... we lost a shootout, something like 20-18. Other team had a guy about Rea's size that crushed one over my head at third like that. I didn't move an inch other than to turn and see it disappear over the trees & into the night sky.

I like the older gentlemen in the white shirt on the back row of the bleachers. He stood up, watched the ball go directly over his head, and then just stood there in awe. He didn't even turn to see where it landed.

I doubt that Wes moved away from the plate yesterday and I wouldn't want him to make any major adjustments now. The angle is tough to tell. I missed that is showed 88 but that still looks like a breaking ball. Hanging sliders tend to go far. I never said he is not capable of that. He is very capable of that. I have seen Wes hit a few balls last year and this year (I think in the SEC tourney this year) that I thought was out and they barely made the warning track. This particular swing you can really see his hips cock and explode. He doesn't put his front foot down as close to the plate as I have seen him do before, so he is effectively as far from the plate as he can be.

As for those who asked I still hold the single season RBI (98) and HR (29) (Ralf tied me on HRs) records for MSU that I set in 1981. In 1981 that also tied the NCAA HR record. I am still 3rd on the career HR list at MSU.
