We're moving in a couple weeks (Jackson to Madison), and I need to hire a couple movers to get the big stuff. Any recommendations/tips?

I don't have any names, but I do have a suggestion. If the company you use offers either 2 movers at $75/hr or 3 at $110/hr, go with the 3.

I hired a couple of part-time guys a few years back to help me and they were great. If I can find their contact info again I`ll PM it to you.

I've moved a lot over the years,

and I've come to realize hiring movers is literally the best money you can spend. Good luck finding some; tbh, most any company is probably gonna be fine, unless the deal looks too good to be true.

This guy right here knows what he is talking about. Some of the best money I ever spent. I don't mind packing it up, but I'll gladly pay someone to load t up and unload it.

You can leave the log chain and 4lb padlock used to chain up your lawnmower. Shouldn't need it in Madison.

I recently moved from my hometown of Kosciusko to Madison County(Gluckstadt area). Hired Two Men and a Truck. They sent 3 men and the truck. They packed that truck to the rafters. We started loading the house in KO about 9:30 in the morning. We finished unloading in the new house by about 4 that afternoon. Cost about $1300.00(Cost based on how many hours they work). Best money I've spent. They did a great job.

thumbtack.com might be worth a look

If there are movers using that service in the area, it's a good way for them to contact you with quotes.

I used it recently outside of MS and was pleased with the feedback I got.

I recently got 3 quotes in Brandon from 2 Men and a Truck, Mississippi Moving, and College Hunks Moving Junk (yes, they are a national chain) College Hunks was by far the cheapest, scary cheaper until I almost didn't use them. I had no problems though. 2 Men and a Truck were scary expensive, way more than anybody else. Got a friend that used A Christian Moving Service and liked them. They had an old beat up truck but did great work locally. Check everybody's insurance policies and ask about travel time charges, that's where it got expensive for me

Some friends of mine use A Christian Moving Service and they were stupid cheap. Of course, they moved about a quarter mile in the same neighborhood.

We've just been renting in Jackson since we sold the old house. Fortunately we don't own anything there.

Try Mississippi Van Lines - http://msvan.com/

I used them about 8 yrs ago to move from Clinton to Madison. I only needed them to move the larger furniture and most boxed stuff. They showed up with a truck the size of the large Uhaul basically and I said there was no way in hell all my **** was going in there. They stacked that MF like a puzzle from top to bottom - front to back. It was incredible. Think my cost was like $700. My house in Madison has a pretty steep driveway and the truck didn't have room to back into the driveway so they carried all of it from the bottom of the driver and up my 5 steps to get into the house. I felt bad for them and gave a $150 tip ($50 to each guy). Probably should have given more. It was WELL worth every penny.

I moved from Belhaven to Cypress Lake 2 weeks ago and used College Hunks. It was dirt cheap and only took them 2 hours (I just had them move the furniture). They weren't as "professional" and 2 men and a truck or some of the others might have been, but they got the job done. Best $375 spent recently.

Clarify if the hourly rate starts when they leave the warehouse or when they get to your place. Get that and the hourly rate in writing. Ask about moving flatscreens or anything breakable you may have. Unhook your washer/dryer before they arrive.

Plan on boxing your **** at least a week before the move. My last move I hadnt boxed half my crap, and it took me days to move it myself.

We just had a china cabinet moved across town (about 20 miles) by Two Men and a Truck. While they were here they moved two relatively small items from downstairs to upstairs.

It cost over $300! Not sure I'd recommend them if you're looking for a bargain, although they were very careful and very courteous.
