Are they necessary for sports? I’m seeing conflicting info. It used to be accepted, but many saying now they are a waste of time.

We all know bench/incline, deadlift and squat are fundamental. I personally think cleans are good and especially jerks, for young guys in sports AND bodybuilders.

I hate cleans and deadlift with a passion. I know a kid that hurt himself doing that crap. Stress fracture in his back. He was out for 3 months. They don’t help you at all. It’s supposed to help you with explosiveness, but I think that’s a bunch of junk.

Can you expand? I’ve seen the same. Would like some actual real reasoning behind it, I’m interested. Seems that overall if you learn good form they are unbeatable. But easy to get injured if not.

I don’t believe the stunted growth stuff anymore. Too many test cases to the opposite.

With cleans, if you don’t keep your core tight, and have good position, it’s easy to hurt your back when weight lands on your chest.

Yeah the catch is tricky. Got to drop back down into the squat position. They didn’t teach us that in 90s MS high school.

There’s video of Saquon out there that shows the perfect form.

But for my kid, I go by the idea that if he can’t catch it and push it up to a jerk (NOT jerk it perverts), then they don’t need to be cleaning it (again no pervert comments).

Mark Rippetoe is a former powerlifter who has a YouTube channel called Starting Strength. He has several videos regarding cleans, their purpose and proper technique. He can get technical on the mechanics but it's pretty good information.
