We have five weeks to go in the regular season, and depending on when they had their bye week, some teams have played four of their eight district games already, whereas some others only have three in the books. Nevertheless, we have seen enough to get a pretty good handle on how things will turn out this year. So here is my assessment, with of course plenty of room for discussion.......

Top of the Heap: Even this early we know already that this is the Year of the Eagle and I fully expect them to finish 10-0. Yes I know some Luray folks think they have the tenacity to possibly slow them down, but I rather doubt it. So in my opinion, East Rock will roll through the regular season and quite possibly a longggg way beyond that, and the Dogs will fight it out with Riverheads for second place, an issue that will be settled a week from Friday.

Now Let's Skip to the Bottom: Unfortunately Stonewall seems destined for the basement again, but as I have mentioned in other threads lately, I see a light at the end of the tunnel for them. However, in a surprising turn of events, I would have to say that Stuarts Draft looks hard-pressed to win any more games other than when they play the Generals. It seems that they are just too young and inexperienced and will just have to wait for brighter days ahead. So I have slid them in to the 8 spot.

Which Makes for an Interesting Battle in the Middle: In alphabetical order, you have Buffalo Gap, Lee, Page and Wilson to fight it out for the 4-7 spots, but more importantly, each one still has realistic sights on a winning season and/or a playoff spot. So far if one has the advantage, it might be the Bison, since they already own wins over Page and Lee. So when they play Wilson that could settle the 4th place spot.

Wilson then might be next in line, since they too have defeated the Leemen, albeit in a most bizarre manner, but hey a win is a win. So the crucial games that may sort out this picture will be the ones when Page plays Wilson and Lee. Lee will be helped somewhat by the return of their quarterback whereas Page also still has its rivalry game with Luray, in which anything can and usually does happen. So bottom line is that those four could finish in almost any order, although I guess a fourth-place finish for Lee is probably out of the question, due to the two losses mentioned above.

Obviously there is a lot of cart-before-horse in that analysis, so feel free to agree or disagree. In fact I am going against the world of sports most important rule..........take it one game at a time, so in that spirit, here is this week's slate of four games, with the Eagles having a bye week.

Luray at Lee: If Lawler has really returned to form and the Leemen are mad over the Wilson loss, this one could be close, but I see Luray as being a couple of scores better.

Wilson at Riverheads: I have read all about Wilson's 66 point game and its 50 point game and its 47 or 49 against Waynesboro, and its 35 at Luray, but I cannot see them scoring at that clip this week. RHS will bring them crashing back down to earth from that huge comeback by at least a 3 TD margin.

Buffalo Gap at Stuarts Draft: The Bison may not have recovered fully from the Riverheads pounding since they almost let one slip away against the Panthers. But Rivenburg should go wild enough to give them a 3-4 TD win over the Cougars.

Stonewall at Page: I have no idea what happened at Lee the other week to allow the Generals to stay in that one, but I think it was a fluke. Page on the other hand is the biggest surprise of the season and a playoff berth seems to be within their grasp. As mentioned above, when they play Lee and Wilson we will learn a lot. This week it will be of course a runaway.

Lee is certainly having an 'interesting' year - if they had any type of a defense, they could hang with anyone.

Last Saturday's game against Wilson was typical of how their games have gone this season - try and outscore their opponents - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

I still think they're a dangerous team if healthy - but they need to cut out the miscues/penalties - as well as shore up on their defensive side.

I think East Rock has a chance to go all the way, to be honest.

RE Lee has been beyond disappointing this year. We all knew they would take a step back talent-wise from last year's team, but I expected the team to continue to move forward with Coach Girolmo's program. They haven't.They still have some talent. The lack of discipline cost them the game at Gap and likely contributed to the scare they got against the Generals. That game was no fluke. The Leemen are already thinking about girls and basketball, maybe brownies too.

Maybe it is just the fan in me, and history seeing this game, but I wouldn't be so quick to write off SD to 8 seed, or even though I certainly hope and dont think it will happen, Stonewall being automatically 9th.

Not saying they should have won or anything of the sort, but SD is 2 plays away from being 3-2 and having a different narrative about them. They are also 1 play away from being 0-5. They certainly have the possibility to pull the "upset" over one of the 4 above them. They also have the ability to get blown out.

Not being there I dont know what happened, but it sounds like Page County should have won the game against Buffalo Gap. Just reading the last quarter and last play of 3rd, Page had 2 TDs called back.

Certainly not calling for an upset, just saying its possible.

The same thing applies to a certain historical football powerhouse in the far west of which SOME (not all) of its fans don't realize it has become a basketball school and is no longer a football school.

That is exactly who I was referring..

Dont know the situation at Gate City, but I do know that REL will always view themselves as a basketball school. Not that many years ago, they were 9-1 or 10-0 going into playoffs. Quite a few of their better players didnt play in playoffs because basketball had started

I have waited all week to chime in on this and honestly I only have a few things to add. I agree with most of what @longtimerhsfan had to say with on glaring exception.

I had penciled this week in with the Hornets when I learned about the new look O and who the playmakers would be this season. I am hoping we aren’t looking past this week to next. I do not think Wilson will have the success they have had recently but they do have some bright spots that could present problems. The Red Team should be effective running our O but even with Wilson having been down the past few years, they always play us extremely tough. It could be a blow out but I rather expect a casual pace to a 28-7 win. I think longtime was dead nuts in score differential, just don’t think it’s gonna be easy sledding to get there.

I have been at Lee for years and there was never a time when Basketball players quit football. Brownies? I think about those all the time. Ask Luray how they feel about now and check back.

Oh yeh. One more thing. We did not have our q.b. for the game against the Generals. No disrespect to them. A win is a win.

This was quite a while ago, and yes the most certainly did have basketball players missing then

I had said this before the Lee/Luray game, and still stand by it...Lee is a dangerous team to face, despite having a porous defense.

They easily be 6-1 (1 point last play loss to Wilson (50-49) and 2 point Tuesday night loss to Gap (40-38)) - the only game they have seriously not been in was the East Rock game, a game in which they lost their starting QB in the 2nd Q, and had to go wildcat with RB Lawler the rest of the game.

I will ask the Athletic Director. I know all of the coaches past and present going back to Hatcher and Carter. I have never heard of this but that does not make it false. If I am wrong, I will admit it. All I can say is this. The Kids on this team are not quitters. They are great kids who love their coach and their school and play football to win. They may not have as much talent as last years team but if they can get their defense straightened out, they could do some damage later on. Peace out.

It wasnt an indictment on the kids, just that these kids were very good ballplayers who were more concerned about basketball, and winning state championships does that to you.
