Do y'all care if it's Easter weekend?

They threw out 3 options
  • 4/4 - 4/6 vs South Carolina
  • 4/18 - 4/20 vs Florida (Easter weekend with final game on Sunday)
  • 5/2 - 5/4 vs Kentucky
Which one would you prefer? I'm against having a weekend where you are trying to get more fans to come to campus on the same weekend where families travel more out of town for other reasons.

Also the spring game is going to be Easter weekend.

The real question is why did we schedule the spring game on Easter weekend. Easter can't move. A fake practice football game can.

Not that I am attending either way, but it's dumb to put yourself in a position to make people choose between traveling for a holiday and coming to a spring game.

Exactly. Move it from Easter.
I submitted the 4/4-4/6 USCe weekend and said I would attend the spring game and baseball.

I mean………….they CANT be so incompetent as to put the spring game on Easter weekend. They CANT BE. Right?? Do they not know some people travel for SBW? Everyone that attends isn’t actually in Starkville, West Point, and Columbus?

And for clarification….. the spring game date is set… but the weekend of SBW is fluid? So we are talking the spring game could be on a different weekend than SBW?? Please calm my nerves and tell me this level of absolute incompetence isn’t in this athletic department currently..

How in the high holy living 17 can it be mid-January, and we still not have the SBW weekend for this year decided? Is this real life? It’s 3 months away, FFS.

It should be the last home series that the students are in session. Every year. That’s the best case for weather and attendance. Regardless of opponent, regardless of Easter, and regardless of the spring game. And it needs to be worked out well in advance with the SEC office….to make sure that its a Fri-Sun series and not a Thurs-Sat series.

ETA: As a sidenote, somebody needs to go to bat for us on the Easter weekend series on an annual basis. I’m too lazy to look it up, but it seems like we have a home series every damn year on Easter. Schedules should rotate to where every team in the league alternates home / away series year over year on Easter weekend.

How on earth can you expect the athletic department to remember there's going to be a SBW every single year???

The only one of those weekends that also have a home softball series is May 2-4 (vs Ole Miss)

They used to try and do it on a weekend where all spring sports were home, football spring game, BBQ contests, concerts.....

In the future, plan SBW so it doesn't fall on Easter weekend.

However given the situation this year... have SBW on Easter Sunday. Baseball and the spring football are on Saturday. I imagine most people leave after the Saturday baseball game or Sunday morning anyways.

It's just a job to some people. Clock in. Clock out and hope to be moving on soon.

That ended with COVID. Now it's just a home baseball weekend with the spring football game. No more arts festival in the Cotton District. No more BBQ competition. Not more spring homecoming type events. It's just a normal baseball weekend with a football scrimmage. There's no longer anything "Super" about it.

We know a festival that would be a perfect addition to the weekend…

Athletic administration is hard. Too much administration can be taxing. It's not as hard at places like Oklahoma. And the salary we pay is only sufficient to cover fund raising and Las Vegas billboards. And, maybe, a little job searching.

Yeah this is absolute idiocy.

That being said and well-known, it should be the SC weekend. Easter shouldn't be an option, and May is too late. Students are getting ready to leave at that point. Seems like it's even been March in the past.

Geez how can they be so moronic.

That was my thought. It's 17ing January. What are they doing in the Bryan Building? Zac Selmon is truly a 17ing joke to allow this to not already be planned. I don't understand how he even got the job, if he can't get his department to plan the big events on campus. I haven't been too critical of Selmon until now, but this is pretty egregious from an administrative standpoint.

Spring game, tennis, softball, Arts Festival, and Wiener Dog Derby aren't on my social calendar, have it when you want. Its odd we're playing baseball on Easter. In years past I think nobody in SEC did, it was always Th, Fri, Sat series only for everybody. This year there's only 2 games that day, ours and KY vs TN.

Is it too much to ask to expect the athletic department to make sound grown-up decisions?

I'm having trouble understanding why anyone other than parents of the players would want to attend our spring game.

The last few years, we have continued to not coordinate our largest sports weekend with any of our large cultural events in Starkville. This leads to a good awful product

Businesses of Starkville could better answer if spreading the events out on the calendar or having them lumped together on fewer weekends is better.... but I figured spreading the events out on the calendar was an effort to increase tourism throughout the year.

There have been baseball games on Easter for most SEC teams every year since they got away from the Saturday DH format. Since SEC Network rollout, only the teams playing in the Thursday TV games do a Thurs-Fri-Sat series….excluding the final weekend of the season where everyone does it, due to the SEC Tournament the following week (which got bigger in 2012 with the expanded SEC, and various format changes over the years).
Before 2012, Thurs-Sat series did not even exist at all.

Easter is a mild inconvenience, but largely a non-issue. Just about everyone heads back early on Sunday anyway, or Saturday night, regardless of Easter happening or not. If you’re one to care about Easter, just join the crowd that’s already doing that either way.

Dad does not like it when you try to worship other things before him. I think that is pretty well established. My thoughts would be given the things I read on here about the upcoming baseball season, it might be a better idea not to anger him, seeing how we will need all the good graces we can get.

Someone brought up a good point. It’s a little concerning we are 3 months away from it and it is not set in stone. Shouldn’t there be some preparation?

No kidding. It’s mid January now. They are awaiting survey results to set the time now? At apparently the pace they roll… they will have it tallied on the first of February. Then one month March, then bam it’s here.

I don’t see how this is that much of an oversight. Gee… how can we get people to campus… get excited… mingle with old friends… let the university try to re energize some donors…and reconnect with MSU sports and campus itself?

Oh yea… let’s half *** a weekend, possibly on a weekend many people wont come for, and slap a name on it that is a shell of what it used to be. Then we can keep falling back on the “we just ole pooo MSU” when it’s asked WTF the department is doing.

Holy hell. How hard is it to bring back a simple BBQ competition, throw in a car show, some more activities on the drill field as simple as a tailgate game competition for cash and prizes, and the Friday baseball game in the evening for Friday. On Saturday one of the stadium clubs for invited donors with food and drinks for certain invited donors to thank them, have a spring game that includes a kids game on the field of some kind for the half, bounce houses for the kids, huge outdoor tailgate near Dudy Noble for the baseball game, a Saturday night concert. Then wrap up on Sunday.

There. 5 friken minutes I just gave you the backbone of the best SBW in decades. You have threegoals. Make the students happy, make the adults/alumni happy. Make the kids happier. That’s it.

I can remember looking for those pocket size schedule cards that you could pick up in a gas station or restaurant - SBW would always be noted with an astric or pound sign. You could usually start finding those cards in November. Think about that - the mid 1990's Larry Templeton led athletic department was ahead of the curve on what we have now.

For no more effort that’s been put in SBW the past few years they could decide on a Wednesday night to have SBW this weekend and announce it on Twitter and voila!
