I mean he always has the best or 2nd best players year in and year out too. Key words for both are year in and year out. They consistently get great players because they're both great coaches. Chizek got 1 great player and rode him to a national title, but otherwise he's been a very mediocre coach. There's a big difference.

Saban 3 totalNational Titles. Miles 1 National Title.

Miles took over Saban's program at LSU that was 1 year removed from a National Championship. LSU hasn't looked the same offensively since Jimbo bolted and that's what lost them the NC this year to....Saban. Saban took over an Alabama program, despite the tradition and resources, that was not in nearly the shape of what Miles took over.

I never said Miles was not a good recruiter, but you don't have to be a good coach to recruit well....hell just go ask our former basketball coach!!

To try to compare him to Miles is beyond ridiculous. A coach's job is to WIN GAMES. Period. Miles has been at LSU for 7 years now. I don't care what shape the program was in when he took over it's HIS program now. And all the man has done is consistently win games. Including the SEC championship this year over Saban's team by beating Saban in Tuscaloosa.

Beyond that though, Miles does a phenomanal job of getting his players to play hard for 60 minutes and to never give up. He has an uncanny ability to know when to try a trick play or a 4th down conversion. His players are always well prepared. Really, the only part of the game he's not great at is clock management. He does and says a lot of stupid stuff and people say he's an idiot, but eating grass and talking to the media don't have a thing to do with coaching football.

Stans did underperform a lot more. I wasn't comparing football to basketball or even saying they were on anywhere near the same level in their respective sports. Just making the simple point that u can recruit great players but that doesn't make you an exceptional coach. I thought I was clear but I guess not.

I'm also not saying that he can't coach a lick. Factoring in doing less with more and more with less I'd have to say the whole thing is pretty accurate. I might would switch Miles and Mullen, and also switch Pinkel and Franklin.

As far as the person Les Miles. Obviously I don't know him personally and never thought that much of him until I read that really long piece someone did on him leading up to the 1st matchup with Bama. I came away really impressed with how he handled his family life/coaching during football season. I think the type of person he is is what makes his players play so hard for him...that can make up for a lot of mistakes. BUT when you have players on the other side just as talented and playing just as hard coaching can make a big difference as we saw in the NC this year. They were completely out coached in that game surely you saw that!

Part of it was that Bama simply had the better team. Miles did coach a bad game in the title game, but there's no excuse for that Bama team to lose to anybody.

Saban dropped the ball on recruiting a kicker. Come on really? I guess Miles gets credit for coaching Bama's kicker to miss 5 field goals. Also I think it goes back to the players making plays category but I guess we can go ahead and give Miles credit for the unbelievable int down at the goal line. We watched a different game!

If he'd punted instead of attempting those FGs, he'd have kept LSU backed up inside the 10 until he eventually scored. He also dropped the ball by panicking and trying a trick play to get a quick TD, that resulted in an interception, when his offense was driving the ball down the field and looked like it had worn LSU's DL out. But I don't particularly fault him for not having a good long FG kicker, or for the 1 makeable FG that was missed.

Were they all short? Except for the "1 makable" 1 of course. You're not doing very well at making a point for Miles having out coached Saban. Even if Saban made a few questionable decision that doesn't chalk one up ole Les in the out coaching category!

Do you think Les could go to USC, UGA, or MSU with the players those 3 schools have and get better results than those 3 coaches? I left out Bama and Ark because those 2 guys are definitely better coaches!

Saban would not have us, OM, Vandy, or KY for a national championship let alone 2 or 3 after one year of frustration.
Georgia's coach has had a world of ability and hasnt made the big game happen.
Petrino has done great, but he hasnt had one bit of competition in recruiting.
Nutt performed pretty well, until he had competition in recruiing
Miles would be a mainstay at the liberty bowl with OM, MSU or Vandy.

Fact is, we all like to think it's ONE reason a program has success. Coaches make a difference. Croom to Mullen..........Whats his face to Saban. But even the ole ball coach has only been able to have decent success at SC. Not nearly what he had at UF.

THese guys are rateable. But the difference in 1 and 9 isnt nearly what we fans make it out to be. Programs are.
