I know auburn loves to run the ball, but I think they're gonna come out throwing deep off PA early. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go deep on the first play. We have to be disciplined in the secondary sat.

In the past, I would have worried if our opponents got on the board first. You know... taking the excitement out of the crowd, etc etc.
Being a long-suffering MSU fan, I felt that when I saw aTm march down the field on their first possession. They cut through our defense like a hot knife through butter.

But this team is different than those past teams. We made adjustments quickly and shut them down.

Here's the thing though... if we hadn't answered with a TD on our drive and then gave up another score on their 2nd possession, how would this team respond?

I don't think we've had to fight back from behind (more than 1 score) this year at all. I hope we don't see it at all this season, but that situation is probably going to happen at some point, and I haven't seen how we respond yet.

i re-watched that first drive. it seemed like we were either sluggish or just playing prevent-lite to get a feel for their offensive calls for the day. consider that an offensive coach is going to script the entire first drive and branch off from there the rest of the game. we played vanilla D that first drive and checked them out.

aubrun has to be able to run the ball to be effective saturday. i'll claim old school thought and say there are three things that can happen when you pass the ball... and two of them are not positive results. i'm not even coming close to suggesting that we just play prevent. last year's game v. aubrun should be all the film we need to see that carp won't fly.

Their play-action is what scares me. Our front 7 can handle the run defense part, we can allow our DBs to bite on the fakes though.

It may have been the nature and results of that drive that made it seem this way to me. But I'm pretty sure that aTm never matched that first drive's tempo for the rest of the game. They we're hitting us fast as hell by getting the next snap off on that first drive, only to slow to a more pedestrian pace for their subsequent possessions. May have been because the plays were scripted for the first one.

I feel like we've finally turned a corner having DP as the leader. Being down a score or screwing up and allowing an easy score (LSU game) doesn't take the wind of the sails any more. There isn't a "oh **** we're behind and can't score to catch up" feeling any more about the team in my mind. I think they will respond well to adversity since we actually have a leader the whole team is behind. Haven't seen that with any of our qbs in the past.

Like BulldogBlitz mentioned, I think that a lot of that first drive tempo had to do with a good set of scripted plays that are honestly just about indefensible as long as players run the right routes.

For me, I'm going to say the same thing about Auburn as I said about A&M. If we come in, play our game, and don't make many bad mistakes, we'll give Auburn all they want and then some. Sounds simple enough, but bear in mind that there were at least 2 times on Saturday when Dak threw VERY dangerous sideline passes. The ball sailed forward on him a few yards more than he intended, and thank goodness the corners made decisions to just knock those balls down. If they had tried to pick them off and succeeded, they would have been Pick 6s. Point being that stuff like that or god forbid something happening to Dak are about the only two things that we absolutely cannot do this weekend. We can recover from just about anything else.
