Chuck from Miss Sports this Morning use to say the NCAA should set up a committee that every school go in front of and explain why they should claim or keep a NC from a magazine.
I guess anyone can claim a national championship for anything. But in the real world, the only legitimate national championships are AP, coaches poll (UPI, USA Today), and of course BCS and playoff champions in the modern era. Everything else is bullsh!t.

The 2004 NC claim is stupid, since they didnt even play in the BCS NC game.
Auburn was #2 in the nation, and years later the winner of the BCS NC game was forced to forfeit, so I guess Auburn looked at the vacancy and was like 'well we are next up!".

Dumb.

That was probably the best USC team of that era, absolutely destroyed Oklahoma in the title game. Had Auburn gotten in I’m not sure they would’ve fared much better.

Golf Digest is clearly a more reputable organization to be awarding a college football national championship than Dunkel, so.....

Eh, who cares. If it didn’t happen in the last 20-25 years, hard for me to consider it relevant. But I do agree with everyone that the 2004 one is dumb. We were awarding actual titles by that point, rather than polls.

And meanwhile we still have nothing inside the stadium commemorating our one actual SEC championship or our western division championship.

Thing about Alabama is they could claim 4 more championships that they ignore, which would throw off their numbering system. Post WWII, Bama only claims championships based on the AP or Coaches' Polls, or the playoffs. They ignore championships awarded to them by other ranking services in 1945, 1966, 1975 and 1977.

In the 80s, the Alabama SID believed they should recognize more titles than the 6 won by Bryant, so he dug through records books and found 5 more, including the 1941 championship awarded by Houlgate. But he used a little bit of sanity and did not pretend any other polls counted after after WWII. So, 11 championships became part of Alabama lore.

By that count, Stallings won the 12th championship, then Saban won 6 more to get them to 18.

And they've made such a big deal out of this NC count. Its mentioned everywhere. It would be awkward to go back and add more now, even though those other 4 are far more legit than 1941.

And just like Auburn, after a day no one would care.
Exactly, i don’t know why our fans can’t comprehend this. Why any fan would be against this is crazy, just another sign of the self loathing our fans wallow in. It’s like they want nothing good to happen.

This pretty much sums up Auburn's desperation. This is the brand image of your program.

I don't get your point. You're saying that at some future date, people will assume the claimed title is legitimate? I don't have an interest in claiming mythical titles, regardless of whether one day people will consider them legitimate.

Have a buddy who was on staff at AU in 2004 when they went undefeated but didn’t play in the BCS title game and he got a Natl Championship ring out of it so they’ve been “claiming” that one for a long time which is SO ABSURD!

Prior to 1998, anybody should claim a "national title" for any year they remotely have a claim. Why not? It's all made up anyway.

Starting in 1998 though, every conference agreed to the BCS (and later CFP) system, so as much as Auburn got hosed in 2004, they were part of that agreement and should not claim a title for that year.
