Rolling Toomer's Corner will continue at Auburn. Even if there are no oaks. The city will install three concrete poles and string wires between them to catch toilet paper fans traditionally rolled the oak trees with.
"It will be in the shape of a triangle, and we'll span two wires between the poles, 3 or 4 inches apart, which will help the toilet paper catch on the wire," Kevin Cowper, assistant Auburn city manager, told the Opelika News. "It'll be at the height of the traffic lights, so it'll be a pretty easy height for people to reach as well." The structure will be built this summer.
Construction of a permanent rolling structure will begin after the 2013 season.
According to the report, the poles will be in the median on College Street and in the two islands in front of Toomer's Drugstore and the Bank Vault. Toomer's Oaks are set to be removed April 23. The removal is scheduled to follow a final rolling of the historic oaks, which were poisoned in 2010, after A-Day on April 20.
