but the rumor was he was close to committing to us, and then suddenly elects for Ole Miss. I'm confident in saying Cohen pursued him.

I don't know why he choose Ole Miss. Not a flame, I really don't know why he choose Ole Miss.

ours being an unknown. I have heard all the hoopla about Cohen really wanting position players in this class and all, don't know if that mattered. I don't personally think that's a good strategy IF IN FACT that's what they did. I think you get the best players available no matter what.

we signed about six pitchers or so in this last class, so while we are focusing on position players, that wasn't necessarily the case in every situation.

I will say that if we sign anymore players to our current class, they will be position players or dual position guys. We need LH power bats badly.

Of course they are a little older than Austin but we signed Head and Seth Smith from there. Both went on to win SEC freshman of the year, both were All SEC multiple times, and both were drafted in the 2nd round of the draft. And yes, of course both of them didn't make it to Omaha ********.

... Cut signed him to hold the clipboard for Eli and it just so happend that he found his way over t to the baseball stadium. He certainly did well for himself.

Whether that was the plan all along or whether it just happened to work out, it probably doesn't matter.

Pisser is Shane Kelley is a former State player and we apparently can't get anybody from there to look at and sign with us.

order to free up another baseball scholly. Now the question why would the FB waste a scholly on a kid who never gonna play. Coach Cut for ya.

FYI, Smith was still on FB scholarship when he was a soph and a jr.

in that we really had a chance to get and failed are Head and Logan Powers. We definately should have gotten both of them. I might include Hartzog in that group, but at least we offered him. It wasn't like we "didn't know Stephen Head could pitch like that" when the guy was a Dandy Dozen guy- which means he was pretty good his junior year. Logan Powers- I don't know what happened there except Polk didn't really seem to care for legacies too much. I don't know why. That's the whole point in having a "tradition". At least Grisham's son wasn't more than a bench guy, and that's one thing, but it's a whole nother thing when the guy can actually play. Conner Gillaspie- who I think I saw in the Diamondbacks box score last night, I'm not 100% on that though, Bryce Brentz, an All-American outfielder at MTSU, and even Julio Borbon who went to UT are all guys that have MSU family ties and we just blew them off.

But, I think as far as Hillcrest, they always seem to have at least one prospect, and we'll get one before long in all likelihood. We have gotten guys like David Hayman and Justin Estel from there, so it's not like it hasn't happened before.

Edit to say- I looked it up the D-Backs box score online. It was a guy named Cole Gillaspie that played at Oregon State.

I actually think she dated Estel at one time. Either way it makes me hate Polk even more.

He always rocked MSU caps and t-shirts, so I was surprised when I heard he committed to us as well. The Hillcrest-Ole Miss pipeline is what helped us out. He's seen kids from his small private school go to Ole Miss and then be drafted pretty high, but he really didn't see a big difference in the programs.

I think he's still pretty raw, but he's got the frame to develop into a pretty good pitcher. He's a good athlete and is probably good enough to play basketball at a smaller school.

There are a few draft risks in this class, mainly Overbay, Wahl, Allen and Bolden. Mullholland and Forrest would have been draft risks but we got "good news" according to the village idiot Yancy now that both of them will have to have Tommy John surgery.

Casey Mulholland, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher and outfielder, comes to the Rebels from The Pendleton School in Bradenton, Florida. He is ranked as one of the nation's Top 100 players by both Perfect Game and Baseball America. He is one of the top-five players in Florida. The right-hander posted a 6-0 record with a 1.39 ERA last season as he struck out 73 batters and walked only 10 in his 40.2 innings of work. He also hit well, batting .355 with five doubles, three triples and eight RBI as he helped his high school to a 29-1 record and final ranking of seventh nationally. Mulholland was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America game this past summer. Mulholland chose Ole Miss over Clemson, North Carolina, LSU, Miami, Florida and Central Florida.

Austin Anderson, a 5-11 middle infielder, comes to the Rebels from Mount Dora High School in Mount Dora, Florida. The rising senior hit .510 last season with a home run, seven triples and nine doubles. He also competed in summer league ball with the Orlando Scorpions, playing alongside fellow signees Allen and Mulholland. Anderson selected the Rebels over Florida State and North Florida.

Will Allen, a 6-4 catcher and first baseman, comes to the Rebels from Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida. Allen hit .395 last season with seven home runs, 10 doubles and 30 RBI as he helped lead Buchholz to the Regional finals for the third consecutive season. He also threw out 10 runners on the season at second base and was named a first team All-State selection in class 6A. Allen was ranked in the Top 200 players in the nation by PerfectGame. He was also selected to play for the USA Baseball's Team USA 16U team in 2008. Allen chose Ole Miss over Florida.

Jimel Judon, a 6-5 outfielder and pitcher, comes to Ole Miss from Myrtle Attendance Center in Myrtle. Judon was 5-1 on the mound this year for Myrtle and also had a solid season at the plate, hitting .380 for the year. Judon chose Ole Miss over Mississippi State, South Alabama, UAB, Oregon and Vanderbilt.

Austin Hartzog, a 6-3 right-hander, comes to Ole Miss from Hillcrest Christian and continues the tradition of a long-line of standouts to play for the Rebels that includes Seth Smith, Stephen Head and Logan Power. Hartzog was an All-MPSA Second Team selection for Hillcrest and also plays quarterback on the football team. Hartzog chose Ole Miss over Mississippi State and Southern Miss.

Casey Greene, a 6-2 right-handed pitcher and infielder, comes to the Rebels from Desoto Central in Olive Branch. Greene is a two-way standout at Desoto, playing shortstop and pitching for the Jaguars. Greene signed with Ole Miss over LSU and Mississippi State.

Ryan Bolden, a 6-4 outfielder, comes to the Rebels from Madison Central in Madison, where he helped lead Madison Central to the Class 5A State Championship. He was named a Top 10 Prospect at the 2009 East Coast Professional Showcase where he ran a 6.38 sixty. He is also ranked as one of the Top 100 high school players in the nation by Perfect Game and Baseball America. Bolden signed with Ole Miss over Mississippi State and LSU.

Bobby Wahl, a 6-4 right-handed pitcher, comes to Ole Miss from West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia. He is ranked as one of the Top 100 players in the country by PerfectGame and Baseball America, after posting a 6-1 record with a 1.89 ERA as he struck out 65 batters and walked only nine in 40.0 innings of work. The right-hander was named a first team All-District selection and was rated as the top player in the state of Virginia by PerfectGame. Wahl chose Ole Miss over North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson and Virginia Tech.

Mike Mayers, a 6-4 right-handed pitcher, comes to Ole Miss from Grove City High School in Grove City, Ohio. This past season, Mayers posted a 10-1 record on the mound with a 1.80 ERA as he earned All-State honors. He helped lead Grove City to a 20-8 record last season and claimed the 2009 Sectional Championship. He also plays quarterback for Grove City and has competed for three years with the Columbus Cobras summer baseball team. Mayers chose Ole Miss over North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Preston Overbey, a 6-3 third baseman, comes to the Rebels from University School of Jackson in Jackson, Tenn. The infielder was named one of the top 150 recruits nationally by PerfectGame and Baseball America, after helping USJ to the District 14 Class 2A Championship and winning the District 14 Class 2A Tournament. Overbey was named an All-District selection as well as being named to the All-Tournament team. He helped USJ to a runner-up finish in the 2007 State Tournament and helped the school to its ninth state tournament appearance in 2008. Overbey selected Ole Miss over Tennessee, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Louisville.

Nathan Foriest, a 6-3 left-handed pitcher, comes to Ole Miss from Harpeth High School in Kingston Springs, Tenn. Foriest posted a 2.00 ERA in his junior season and pitched two no-hitters and a pair one-hitters in the regional showcase games. He also was selected to play for the Southeast team in the Area Code Showcase Tournament in California. The left-hander also plays on the football team at Harpeth, playing middle linebacker and wide receiver. Foriest chose Ole Miss over LSU, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Jordan Poole, a 6-3 outfielder and first baseman, comes to Ole Miss from Calhoun High School in Calhoun, Ga. The utility player was a key player for Calhoun this past season, hitting .405 with 16 home runs and drew 38 walks to help pace the offense. Over the past two seasons, Poole has combined for 32 home runs and 87 RBI for his high school team. Poole also competes in summer ball with East Cobb, where he played with current Ole Miss Rebel Zach Lowery. He also boasts a 4.0 grade point average. Poole chose Ole Miss over TCU, LSU, Florida International and Clemson.

Tanner Bailey, a 6-7 right-handed pitcher, comes to the Rebels from Texarkana College where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a 20-8 record and the 2009 Region XIV East Conference Championship. It was the sixth conference title for the program in the last nine seasons. At Texarkana College, Bailey posted an 8-1 record with a 3.75 ERA in 62.1 innings of work. He struck out 62 batters and walked only 19 on the year. Bailey played for Little Rock Christian Academy in high school, helping his team finish as 5A West Conference runners-up and an appearance in the state semifinals. He earned All-State honors and helped his team to a No. 1 national ranking by the National Christian School Athletic Association.

Les Smith, a 6-1 outfielder, enrolled at St. Louis Community College - Meramec this fall after having played a season at Louisiana-Lafayette. Smith was also 4-for-4 in steals. In high school, Smith earned second team All-State honors and was a four-time All-District selection out of Dyersburg High school in Dyersburg, Tenn. As a senior, Smith hit .410 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI, setting the school record at the time for home runs in a season.

As for Shane Kelley, he doesn't push his players at all to State, he lets them make their own mind (from his mouth).

He was excited for the kid that he got a chance to go to Ole Miss, but said he would've liked him to go to State, for obvious reasons.

Nice guy, bigtime State family. I'm surprised he hasn't sent more to State in the last few years than he has (none, I think).

and next year's class is off to a great start as well. But we have had our fair share of average classes lately due to the draft, kids being kicked off the team, and kids being busts. In other words I think it will be another 2 years before we put a really strong team on the field again. If things start to fall into place for Cohen and his classes panout, starting about 2012 things could be very interesting between the two programs. Of course you still have LSU and Arkansas to worry about in the West and my God O'Sullivan is bringing in ridiculous talent to UF.

But last year's class was strong on paper until Renfroe went pro and Frazer and Lowery got kicked off for stealing from the locker room. Top 3 signees from the class, all gone.

Lindsay was the Homecoming Queen in 1999. One of the best looking girls to ever come out of Hillcrest. She was one of the Hillcrest girls on the Bumpers Biggie Bag commercial also, back in the mid-late 90's.
