A lot of you are too young to have seen or to have remembered watching a movie in 1977. But when Star Wars came out the economy sucked and energy prices were sky high. Star Wars was a good-vs-evil feel-good fantasy movie with cinematic invention that captivated America. It wowed people in ways not seen since The Wizard Of Oz dazzled audiences with color. The technology invented for Star Wars berthed companies like THX, Lucasfilm, and Skywalker Sound which went on to wow us time and again for decades to come.

Avatar is pretty much the same thing, taken to a new level. Just damn. What an awesome flick. Go see it. In 3D.

... computer generated. Absolutely unbievable. James Cameron is a god. Maybe not THE God, but a normal everyday god like Zeus or Jackie Sherrill.

i know several people complaining about it being too liberal, but i think they're mostly boring/unimaginative people who want to feel important/angry. really good movie. also, predictable doesn't equal bad. enter nabokov/laughterinthedark. maybe not

There's an underlying liberal theme. But so what. The movie is as innocent as say Robinhood, which is also clearly liberal. Its a fun movie. Its no Pleasantville (a movie in black & white, which converts to color as characters discover their liberal inner beings).

But I did have to shake my head an chuckle when the words "our security lies in preemptive attack", "shock and awe", and "daisy-cutter" were all used in the span of about a minute. James Cameron couldn't just let the liberal undertones go without a slap to the face to answer the viewer's self-questioning as to whether the movie was political or the viewer was just feeling too Fox News sensitive.

All in all, its a great movie. I loved it. And I'm just about as conservative as they come.

even though at times it was predictable, the special effects and the technology was the best I've ever seen.

The movie really is awesome I'm one of the biggest conservatives alive and I loved it. I hate people that get way too caught up with underlying themes its just a movie. I will say this, by the end of the movie I admit that I found Neytiri attractive and that I want to be an avatar.

Saying that an Obama-like President will invade an innocent planet of loving, self-sufficient people, exploit them in the name of "doing good for them", and then destroy them when they don't like America's leadership, using ACORN-like characters to lead the troops against those innocent aliens.

Just set in the future with incredible special effects. Should we start burning copies of Dances With Wolves now?</p>

The 2nd viewing was more because i was with my family who had not seen it yet, but it was even better than the 1st viewing. So now, I'm thinking of going with the trend and see if it is better the 3rd time...and 4th... so on and so forth.

I would advise sitting pretty close to the screen. The more you remove your peripheral vision the better the 3-D is. The first time I saw it I sat in my normal 2/3 the way up seat and it was cool. But when i sat in the "thrill seekers" section it really seemed like the 3-D was slapping you in the face. My mother even got motion sick and had to sit through half the movie with her eyes closed.

I ganked my 3-D glasses in hopes that release the DVD in 3-D, and in hopes the glasses come back into style like in Back to the Future. (10-1 says i lose them within the week)

I LOVE watching movies. Its a favorite hobby, and pretty much the only hobby I've been able to keep since becoming a parent. I am willing and able to be uncritical so that I can be entertained.

But if you want to revel in a good bashing of the liberal tones of the movie, this is a pretty good read - http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/kline/091225

I sat close to the front so my peripheral vision was limited. It's unlike anything that has ever been on the big screen. It is a watershed movie. Here is what one reviewer wrote:

Is it a great movie? Maybe not. But it is a great step forward in moviemaking. Shrug it off if that makes you feel better, but starting today you live in a post-Avatar movie world.

That about sums it up.

..I haven't seen Avatar, but your link is to an article that presents the usual right wing fear-mongering, strawman arguments & conspiracy theories. (As well as the obligatory dig at Al Gore).

If Avatar is truly a "pro-environment" movie, then good.

We need more pro-environment movies.

although I'm very conservative, these people who are bashing the movie because it's "liberal" or "pro-environment" are idiots. Just enjoy the movie. It was one of the most monumentally awesome movies I've seen in a long time and I fear I will be seeing it again for the third time soon.

Reading some buzz, I ran across this....

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to say TOO much about AVATAR that other people havent said already. Everyone with a website is throwing in their two cents, so I have decided to merely say this: I am one of the biggest Star Wars nuts on the planet. The original trilogy came out at the perfect age for me, so I have enveloped myself within it all these years. I even have a Star Wars collection that has been showcased on www.joblo.com http://www.joblo.com/dvdclinic/index.php?id=4508

With that said, I would like to send an open letter to George Lucas.

"Dear George,
I know you have that pesky restraining order and all, but I have to say this will be my last letter.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Mr. Lucas, please watch AVATAR 3D IMAX, and then drive home and watch Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance.</span> <br style="font-weight: bold;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">After that, please kiss my ***.</span> I'm selling my Star Wars collection, you are welcome to buy it back from me.

Sincerely,
Andy

Greatness. I can't hate on Lucas for not jumping into 3D. Much deserved storyline criticisms aside, Lucas's CGI sucked.

just a heads up, I think (I'm no scientist but I did steal from a Holiday Inn Express last night?) that you probably don't want to wear those 3D glasses outside of the theater. My understanding is that they're some sort of special non-polarized or prismatic lenses and that if you look at other light sources it could do some serious damage to your eyes. I'm not chomping at the bit to test that theory, and if I'm wrong feel free to mock me but just thought I'd pass along what I heard...
