You don't have to go play at Jackson State. And if you're doing well, there will be enough fans there regardless of who you play, and you don't risk losing.

The one person you can expect to be on the MSU bandwagon about this is Rick Cleveland.

Xeno is completely right, if MSU wins, they are supposed to, if they lose they just elevated USM in the state in the eyes of recruits, and fans.

MSU can always big brother USM because of the SEC, if USM beats them on the field, there is very little MSU can hang their hat on. Also, if it is a home and home, that is just another tough road game with very little benefit for MSU.

"If MSU wins, they're supposed to"? Says who? If USM and MSU played next week, USM would be favored. In Starkville or Hattiesburg.

I completely agree with DowntownDawg and Jamdawg. I would be all far playing Southern as long as they where considered our toughest OOC game every
year. Why not.....It would be a sellout and on TV......I believe Southern has gained enough respect in the national media that i don't buy the whole argument
we are supposed to win cause we are in the SEC. Believe me go look at Southern's football Facilities.....they ain't half bad.
And I completely agree about the Tulane game getting to play in the dome is awesome and you know the tourism
industry in New Orleans would love to have us.
But i would want a 2 for 1 with Southern tho because we have SEC dollars.
And a Home and Home with Tulane because they have New Orleans backing them.

I called y'all pussies for not playing them during the time we did in the 80's. We beat them the last 2 times. Both times they had a guy named Favre playing QB. We quit them winners..... you, not so much.

they placed the economic impact of a home game to Starkville in the several million dollar range. It's more than just what the school makes, the town needs those home games to prosper as well.

Its an awesome place. Maybe 6-8 of us can get together and play in their flag football league while we are there. Just for the bigtime football experience.

It's 2009. Embrace this. 1998 was one year. Dare I say, 1941 was one year. Our championship-level success in this sport, in this conference, is documented seemingly a half-century at a time. Playing and losing to Southern Miss won't mean a damn thing. It will hurt our pride, but what loss won't? In these trying economic times, lay down your concerns of what other schools would and wouldn't do and recognize this for what it will be... an exciting college football game. Who gives a f*ck what Ole Miss "will never" do? That mentality only confirms their ********** nature. We are the People's University, and we should never care to compare our mindset with theirs.

I realize some of you are concerned with how playing the Eagles could impact recruiting, but fear not! We are a member of the Southeastern Conference. That is something the University of Southern Mississippi will never be able to say. And now, with ESPN's new billionaire deal to the SEC, we are immune to non-conference losses impacting in-state recruiting on a large scale. If an 18-year old kid were to say, "Wow, USM beat State in Starkville. I'm going to USM." Let him go. The bottom line is this: he probably would have gone anyways. The exposure a student-athlete will receive by playing in the SEC is now second to none in the world. Any recruit would be a fool not to realize this.

What will matter from here on out, on our end, is an impressive atmosphere. You want a north endzone? You want to be the kind of team that actually could demand a home-only game from USM? Well, we better start winning. And we better start filling up that god damn stadium. With all of our games being televised, we need to impress viewers not only with what we have on the field, but also with what we have in the stands. We need opponents willing to travel to our fair city, drink our Sunday beer, and envy our culinary delights and debauchery in the Junction. You think all that painting and posting on Davis Wade is just for us? No, it's just as much for the visitors and viewers on television.

Stop being pussies. This series is long overdue. Like snapping into a Slim Jim, the Starkville-Hattiesburg marriage will only generate excitement. Filling up our stadium for a non-conference game can do nothing but HELP. I detest any attitude that feels we are better than this. Better than what? Better than our record? Better than our bank account? Better than a team that's been to more bowl games than we have? Take this situation as an opportunity. A challenge. An obligation to the Great State of Mississippi. Let's pull up our jocks, and go play these Buzzard Bastards wherever the hell they want.
Excellent, excellent, excellent. Great post.

Greg Byrne, let's play. Just line up and play football.
